Problems with "File Association" in Windows 7 64-bit

Although I am able to go through the "regular" process to associate a program with an extension it doesn't work.  After going through the browse process and selecting the program it brings me back to the "open with" window.  The program I've selected does not appear in the "open with" window and it appears that it is simply ignoring me.

I've also tried the "Default Programs" route but wind up at the same "open with" window that still ignores me.

Suggestions?

  1. I've realized that this is probably not the proper forum for this question so feel free to ignore!
  2. I've also realized that this may be an issue with associating extensions with non-64-bit programs and appears to be a non-issue if trying to associate with a 64-bit program... go figure.

After playing around a lil I think I've figured it out.. [for me at least..]

The program that you're pointing to isn't registered correctly.

In regedit: Navigate to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applicationsand find your .exe name.

Navigate under its name to shell>open>command. In the Default change its location to the actual location of the executable, hit okay and then try and reassociate the file type as you normally would.

Let me know if that doesn't seem to work.

    Xandragnis, you have just saved my day! :) In fact I moved the application from one drive to an other and the parth there has not followed.

    Since you are trying to run a .bat file, could it be that the file is "blocked"?

    a. Right-click the blocked file and then click Properties. [I.e. click the file's name in Windows Explorer]

    b. In the General tab, click Unblock.

    c. Click on Apply and then click Ok.

    I did create a New Account but nothing has happened, the registries are still the same. Actually I tried executing various batch files but none of them are actually getting executed. Solutions I have tried Already are:-

    1:- Deleting the .bat registry in HKCU/.............FileExts/

    2:- Merging a new .reg file in the registry editor

    3:- Checking if file associations are correct via cmd and executing assoc .bat and ftype

    4:-Other things that are usually recommended on internet like Deleting the User choice in the .bat section of HKCU

    Your solution worked perfectly for my situation.  Just for posterior sake, for those who might be attempting the same thing I did I offer the following information:

    I created a RAM-Disk (makes some of the RAM look like a hard drive, ikn my case I made it the "R" drive) to allow my CAD program to run faster. It was taking as much as 5 minutes to complete a "Redraw".  I installed the program on the "R" drive instead of the regular "C" drive, and after a couple of tweeks, all worked well. Except that Win7 wouldn't allow me to set/change the default program for the file type to the program on the "R" drive instead of being in the "C:\Program Files (x86)".  I found the Registry entry following your instructions, and discovered that it was pointing to the "C" drive, despite having told the program installer to install on my "R" drive.  Looks like the installer defaults to the "C" drive no matter what you request, when it comes to the registry entries.

    Now that the associations are corrected I find that I can load, redraw, render, and any other task desired with this program in mere seconds (the redraw that used to take 5 minutes, now takes less than 2 seconds).
