Although I am able to go through the "regular" process to associate a program with an extension it doesn't work. After going through the browse process and selecting the program it brings me back to the "open with" window. The program I've selected does not appear in the "open with" window and it appears that it is simply ignoring me.
I've also tried the "Default Programs" route but wind up at the same "open with" window that still ignores me.
Suggestions?

After playing around a lil I think I've figured it out.. [for me at least..]
The program that you're pointing to isn't registered correctly.
In regedit: Navigate to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applicationsand find your .exe name.
Navigate under its name to shell>open>command. In the Default change its location to the actual location of the executable, hit okay and then try and reassociate the file type as you normally would.
Let me know if that doesn't seem to work.

Hey this is awesome. Not only did office 2013 De-Activate itself a week after delivery to my clients busy doctors office, (causing multiple MO's to call constantly whilst freaking out because they couldn't get their work done ) but it ALSO decided NOT TO associate any Doc, DocX, XLS, XLSX files etc. across multiple user accounts on Each workstation, all of which are brand new workstations running Windows 7 Pro on a domain.
Why is this great? because I get to charge the customer $99 per hr to go to 4 different workstations and log in to approx. a dozen accounts per workstation and set the defaults on each profile (yes, its per profile, wtg MS!) heck, I earned $30 just sitting on the phone waiting for MS slower than molasses re-activation sequence to complete.
Ahh yes, easy money. My client on the other hand wants to throw all these new workstations out the windows (sic) but me, I thank MS for being a glitchy buggy POS!
And while we're at Id like to thank them for Windows 8 which is making my company HEAPS of money as new users in business environments struggle with the learning curve (hey everyone loves to learn about computers when they are at work right? ) Thanks for pulling Windows 7 off the market ( our clients LOVED that OS in general) Windows 7 was far too slick and often didn't make us much money. Windows 8 on the other hand is a cash cow for Business IT companies and since MS have forced our hand by pulling Windows 7 and office 2010 off the open market, we have no choice but to pass the buck so to speak, to MS, while raking in the bucks from our frustrated clientele!

Worked for me too, but I had to put the (space)%1 , like dir/dir/filename.exe %1 Then it worked.
