Problems with "File Association" in Windows 7 64-bit

Although I am able to go through the "regular" process to associate a program with an extension it doesn't work.  After going through the browse process and selecting the program it brings me back to the "open with" window.  The program I've selected does not appear in the "open with" window and it appears that it is simply ignoring me.

I've also tried the "Default Programs" route but wind up at the same "open with" window that still ignores me.

Suggestions?

  1. I've realized that this is probably not the proper forum for this question so feel free to ignore!
  2. I've also realized that this may be an issue with associating extensions with non-64-bit programs and appears to be a non-issue if trying to associate with a 64-bit program... go figure.

After playing around a lil I think I've figured it out.. [for me at least..]

The program that you're pointing to isn't registered correctly.

In regedit: Navigate to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applicationsand find your .exe name.

Navigate under its name to shell>open>command. In the Default change its location to the actual location of the executable, hit okay and then try and reassociate the file type as you normally would.

Let me know if that doesn't seem to work.

    2. I'm horrified that this was even an issue.  Microsoft - you've got the world-leading OS and you can't cope with file associations properly!
    3. This forum needs to change its approach to marking an answer as the definitive.  Xandragnis's post is from 2009.  I'm writing in 2013.  Do you see? It has the potential for being an archive of definitive answers that people can refer back to for years to come.  The idea of marking an answer automatically after 7 days is far too quick.  You should study StackOverflow's policy: the forum can act as a place for active Q&A but should also act as an archive.  It's more useful to me when I see that an answer has not been marked as being answered definitively - I can check back from time to time to see if the answer is forthcoming or I can have a go at answering it myself.

    For more information, to solve the powerpoint problem just change the default program file to this (POWERPNT.EXE) but not this one (PPTICO.EXE) 

    located here >>  C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14

    Worked like a charm... I had Sublime3 installed, but wanted to move back to 2 (3 is still in beta right now).
