Problems with "File Association" in Windows 7 64-bit

Although I am able to go through the "regular" process to associate a program with an extension it doesn't work. After going through the browse process and selecting the program it brings me back to the "open with" window. The program I've selected does not appear in the "open with" window and it appears that it is simply ignoring me.

I've also tried the "Default Programs" route but wind up at the same "open with" window that still ignores me.

Suggestions?

I've realized that this is probably not the proper forum for this question so feel free to ignore!
I've also realized that this may be an issue with associating extensions with non-64-bit programs and appears to be a non-issue if trying to associate with a 64-bit program... go figure.

After playing around a lil I think I've figured it out.. [for me at least..]

The program that you're pointing to isn't registered correctly.

In regedit: Navigate to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applicationsand find your .exe name.

Navigate under its name to shell>open>command. In the Default change its location to the actual location of the executable, hit okay and then try and reassociate the file type as you normally would.

Let me know if that doesn't seem to work.

My problem is that on my customers computer they have somehow deleted or currupted the .exe extention.

I'm sorry but i don't find this helpfull at all because if your .exe file is not valid or a part of your regristry you can't open regedit from the windows/system32 folder because it's a .exe it self.

I know if you have all other kinds of file extentions this would be the correct answer because you can fix it manually but then what if it's the .exe thats the problem?

Any ideas what to do with this one?

For those that are having problems with the registry fix...

You need to also be sure to add the file name at the end of the path.

Example.

I was having an issue with making .caf files open in Audition instead of QuickTime. The registry hack I had to do was this....

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Audition CS5.5\Adobe Audition.exe" "%1"

Keep the quotes around the path and the %1.

The easiest way to make sure you have the path correct is to navigate to the file in Windows Explorer and simply copy the text in the address bar to the clipboard. Then when you edit the key in the reg you just past it then type in the file name of the .exe.

Also to note it's always a very smart idea before making any changes to the registry to go to file>export and export yourself a backup. In the event you ^&^#*&^%# something up you can simply double click your exported file to return your registry back to it's normal state.

On a side note. Geesh this idiocy of this bug makes me love my Macs at work that much more errr to windowz.

I have this problem where after syspreping a windows 7 machine and deploying too 100s of users. When the new users login all the image file type associations are completely blank.

You were right, the modification in the registry worked quite well to fix the problem in connecting extensions with NO-installing programs.
