Desktop shortcut for the sleep command?

Is there any way to make a desktop shortcut for the sleep command? I can't find the actual location that the sleep button on the start menu points to. It has to point somewhere! Please, if anyone knows how i can create this shortcut, help!!! Thanks a bunch!

Tar-ter,

To create a shortcut that will execute the sleep command in Vista:

  • Right Click in the desired location (On the Desktop or in a folder)
  • Select New -> Shortcut
  • In the “Type the location of the item” field enter the following
  • Rundll32.exe Powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Sleep
  • Click Next
  • This will create a shortcut with the name rundll32,
  • Right Click the shortcut, select Rename and type in Sleep

**** You can now open this shortcut whenever you desire to put your computer into sleep mode.

Note: You can replace the default icon with a Shutdown one by:

  • Right Click the created shortcut, select Properties -> Change Icon
  • Navigate to this link in the **“**Look for icons in this file:” field:
  • %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll icons
  • Find the desired icon.
  • Click Ok.

    I found an easier way to put computer into sleep.

    Download the above link and run it. Your computer will go to sleep without asking to run as administrator.

    I extracted the file from a windows gadget.

    If you have any doubt with my file, download from above and extract by yourself.

    The sleep.exe should be in

    C:\Users<user name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\SystemControl.gadget\Core\sleep.exe

    Instead of surloc solution you can:

    • Click Menu Start->cmd.exe Right Mouse Button and choose Run as administrator from pop-up menu
    • type powercfg -h off

    This will permanently disable hibernation but let PC go into sleep using Rami's instructions.

    There is also just tapping the power button to put it in to sleep. Or at least it's just because of my laptop and docking station. But if you have a laptop that also works. :)

    I incorrectly noted this as YES as being helpful when in fact I jumped the gun and in fact NO it was not. Like everyone else has posted, it puts it in hibernation or some other sort of quasi shut down mode deeper than sleep. Too bad you didn't try this out before offering it to the public. What really bugs me is that your associate comes back and has the gull to ask the person who stated it puts the machine into hibernation to check to make sure his machine is capable of sleeping. Why not just try the executable out on a Win 7 machine yourself and you'd know it doesn't work instead of asking people to jump through freaking hoops! Come on guys. Due some due diligence.
