how do you completely disable the preview window that pops up when your mouse pointer hovers over an item on the taskbar?
the only thing i've been able to do is turn off the desktop composition option, which turns the preview windows into lists.
i don't want *anything* popping up. all it does is get in the way! thanks in advance

You can set the hover time to a long value
Open Regedit by the use of RUN command or start menu search go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
there right click on right pane Create a new DWORD called ExtendedUIHoverTime and set the value to 20000 (that's 20 seconds) or value of your wish..
for that much of seconds it will not pop up..
so by hopefully turned off.

the value is in Milli seconds, and has to be a Decimal value. hex character not accepted.
Dword has designed accordingly 32 bit and 64 bit for respective versions.

Thumbnails or popups, it does not matter WHAT you call these irritations. They are NOT needed and the are BOTHERSOME at best. I have considered them as CLUTTER for the past 10 years so far and MS's EMBRACING of this FOOLISHNESS is just adding more fire to the HATRED of MS systems.
Trust me, if anyone came out with an operating system right now that was USER FRIENDLY and corporations embraced the system then MS would be DUST within a year or two due to their REFUSAL to embrace what the USER wants. Someday, they will RE-ADD a WORKING SEARCH TOOL so you can scan your harddrives for a file without having to resort to a DOS WINDOW ALL THE TIME (yeah MS what the **** were you thinking??? I don't need a built in INTERNET SEARCH TOOL, THAT is useless if your files, like this 'legendary' GPEDIT.msc file, can be found ON YOUR HARDDRIVE!!!
To add something, just because it's TRENDY to a few braindead gamer brats, is foolish as your ADULT USERS actually USE the computer (or TRY to despite all your attempts to turn us OFF of the idea), for WORK and BUSINESS. (yeah remember them? they actually PAY your wages).

The guy that reported the REGEDIT method of removing the popups on the taskbar was WRONG. It does not turn off anything noticeable. The damned popups on the taskbar are still popping up and cluttering up the desktop.
Microsoft, Windows 8 is an excellent advertisement for Apple products... inasmuch as what NOT to do.
Foxxe, I too get frustrated with Windows' features from time to time. I usually find solutions that work on sites like this. For me, the registry edit worked (Win7 Pro 64bit) and it was actually an enhancement - I set it to 5 seconds so I can choose to use it when it's useful by hovering the mouse for 5 secs. If you're SO upset with Microsoft you should switch to Linux and wait patiently for "corporations" to "embrace" it (hint, SCO Unix was the latest new thing about thirty years ago).
