how do you completely disable the preview window that pops up when your mouse pointer hovers over an item on the taskbar?
the only thing i've been able to do is turn off the desktop composition option, which turns the preview windows into lists.
i don't want *anything* popping up. all it does is get in the way! thanks in advance

You can set the hover time to a long value
Open Regedit by the use of RUN command or start menu search go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
there right click on right pane Create a new DWORD called ExtendedUIHoverTime and set the value to 20000 (that's 20 seconds) or value of your wish..
for that much of seconds it will not pop up..
so by hopefully turned off.

yes,
the value is in Milli seconds, and has to be a Decimal value. hex character not accepted.
Dword has designed accordingly 32 bit and 64 bit for respective versions.

For months I have been dealing with these annoying popups. OMG!!!!! Whose dumb idea was that. These people get paid to totally trash things that worked before. I switched to Classic View and it worked (except for some annoying bar that seems to be stuck in the middle of my screen...oh surprise, another lovely problem). Oh, hello, 1999. I cannot believe I have to work with such an outdated look and feel just to stop some lame popups that absolutely make no sense. First off, they are huge. Then, the text and image are blurry so you cannot read anything on them. They are of no use whatsoever. We can see our taskbar buttons. What is the use of these things? Who in their right mind allowed this to go through production? It’s absolutely a joke. I stress out every day when I’m on my computer because I’m afraid to move my mouse anywhere below the halfway mark. I mean really. It’s friggen stressful because boom, here comes a useless popup, and guess what, it won’t go away. So now I need to close my window and reopen it just to deal with it again. I cannot get any work done because these stupid popups are always POPPING UP! I swear I will not buy Windows again. If they are so ignorant to allow something so ridiculous to go through without an option to turn it off, then good luck to them. Give your program manager thumbs up for that. Everyone I show this too freaks out. They cannot believe there is no way to turn them off. Well, I’m now using a view that’s more than a decade old. Great! Wonderful! You guys are brilliant. What a bangin job you did. Perfect! A+++ Not!!!!!!!!
I appreciate the tip, but after changing these settings in gpedit.msc and restarting, I am still seeing the thumbnail previews. Is there a step missing from the steps above? Or do I simply need to make the registry change noted in this thread?

What is the percentage of people who actually think they are "a very important and handy feature for many of us"? I can't believe there are many compared to the percentage of people who hate them. And you give no explanation WHY so many of you think they are "very important and handy." Until you can, I don't plan on revising my opinion of the intrusive and constantly annoying nature of these pop-ups that no one requested and most people hate. And they ARE pop-ups.
