how do you completely disable the preview window that pops up when your mouse pointer hovers over an item on the taskbar?

the only thing i've been able to do is turn off the desktop composition option, which turns the preview windows into lists.

i don't want *anything* popping up.  all it does is get in the way!  thanks in advance

Hi telum01

You can set the hover time to a long value

Open Regedit by the use of RUN command or start menu search go to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

there right click on right pane  Create a new DWORD called ExtendedUIHoverTime and set the value to 20000 (that's 20 seconds) or value of your wish..

for that much of seconds it will not pop up..

so by hopefully turned off.

Hope it helps

Hi Tangency

yes,

the value is in Milli seconds, and has to be a Decimal value. hex character not accepted.

Dword has designed accordingly 32 bit and 64 bit for respective versions.

thanks for understanding

I agree.  I think Microsoft is either ignoring what people want or is trying to force people to conform to what Microsoft likes.

I have Windows 7 on my Desktop and I actually prefer Windows Vista because it was easier to use and more customer friendly than this 7 Bull-excrement.

Ross, I keep trying to go to Start > Search gpedit.msc....nothing I enter works...why?

Secondly, I have done everything on this page and it's still not working (minus the gpedit.msc method)...I'm going to try rebooting again. *Fingers crossed*

I'm not trying to be a dick, but I agree with some of the comments above. I'm about to get rid of MS all together cause of little annoying things like this. Please talk to bosses about that. Just cause 10 people find it neat, doesn't mean the other 1,000 do! The thing I miss about XP, was being able to switch it back to being like 98. I can turn off all the visuals and so forth, but on 7 I can't seem to find anything anymore. All the old shortcuts look like they're gone. When I right click on the desktop, go the Properties, I want to see the Display again! Things like that is what helps all of us long-time users navigate around the system. I would really like to see some of those return in the future. Your going to scare off all the long-time users...I'm already looking into other OS's, and I certainly don't like that idea.
