How do you disable the taskbar preview window pop-ups?

how do you completely disable the preview window that pops up when your mouse pointer hovers over an item on the taskbar?

the only thing i've been able to do is turn off the desktop composition option, which turns the preview windows into lists.

i don't want *anything* popping up.  all it does is get in the way!  thanks in advance

Hi telum01

You can set the hover time to a long value

Open Regedit by the use of RUN command or start menu search go to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

 there right click on right pane  Create a new DWORD called ExtendedUIHoverTime and set the value to 20000 (that's 20 seconds) or value of your wish..

for that much of seconds it will not pop up..

so by hopefully turned off.

yes,

the value is in Milli seconds, and has to be a Decimal value. hex character not accepted.

Dword has designed accordingly 32 bit and 64 bit for respective versions.

    Telum (and others),

    Taskbar Thumbnails (not called popups) are actually a very important and handy feature for many of us.

    However, for those who don't agree there IS an easy way of disabling them and no need to "hack" the registry:

    1. Click on Start button and type GPEdit.msc in Instant Search text box, then hitEnter .
    2. Navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates >Start Menu and Taskbar in left pane of Local Group Policy Editor.
    3. Locate and double click on Turn off taskbar thumbnails in right pane of Local Group Policy editor.
    4. Select Enabled radio button.
    5. Click OK to make the change effective.
    6. Logoff and logon again or restart computer if needed.
    7. To re-enable Taskbar preview feature in Windows 7, just set the value to Disabled or Not Configured .

    Hi Ross

    Just to clarify, the policy that you are describing is for Vista only. It has no effect on the Windows 7 Taskbar Thumbnails. You can see this (Windows Vista only) in the description of that policy.

    REALLY?  Then what point is there to having the entry in the GPEdit.msc?  Same stupid ____ MS does.

    When I type in GPEdit.msc in the Instant Search box, I'm told that "No items match your search."

    Is it possible that the GPEdit (and other features) are somehow disabled on my machine?  I'm running Windows 7 64 bit on a HP Pavilion desktop.

    If you have the Home version of Windows 7, the Group Policy Editor (GPEdit.msc) is not available in that version.

    thanks for the help!

    it just amazes me that even though people hate pop-ups, Microsoft wouldn't include an EASY method of disabling them.  if people don't like pop-ups in their web browsers, why on earth would they like them in their OPERATING SYSTEM????

    thanks again for the help.  but it won't be much longer before i give up on Microsoft altogether....

    First, your tweak DOESN'T work.  The is a MS bug obviously.

    Really?  How are the thumbnail previews helpful?  The average computer idiot can't handle having more than two apps open at once so they have to be really dumb not to be able to figure out which button is the app they want to switch to.  But I guess if you are brain dead and you have the silly grouped  (ie you have several browser windows open MS will group them under one button) thumbnail option still working you might need this feature. Which is even more ridiculous considering every modern browser has tabs.

    But no matter what your preference the user shouldn't have to resort to hacks to disable ____ that MS thinks are useful.  Some things you have to go into the registry for, some you use GPEdit.msc, some you use the Control Panel.  How about just a simple Right click on the Toolbar and select TURN OFF GROUPING, TURN OFF THUMBNAILS. Heck no that would be too simple. 

    And hey MS is listening to the USERS right? You did see all the Ads that said so.
