how do you completely disable the preview window that pops up when your mouse pointer hovers over an item on the taskbar?
the only thing i've been able to do is turn off the desktop composition option, which turns the preview windows into lists.
i don't want *anything* popping up. all it does is get in the way! thanks in advance

You can set the hover time to a long value
Open Regedit by the use of RUN command or start menu search go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
there right click on right pane Create a new DWORD called ExtendedUIHoverTime and set the value to 20000 (that's 20 seconds) or value of your wish..
for that much of seconds it will not pop up..
so by hopefully turned off.

yes,
the value is in Milli seconds, and has to be a Decimal value. hex character not accepted.
Dword has designed accordingly 32 bit and 64 bit for respective versions.

A reboot is necessary. Works in Windows 8 as well.
Of all the suggestions in this now very long thread, the only one that worked for me is the registry edit:
Run regedit
Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
Right click in the right pane and create a new DWORD called ExtendedUIHoverTime
Set the decimal value to the desired delay time in milliseconds (e.g. 5000 for 5 seconds)
This has been working for me for some time. Coincidentally, I had to reinstall Win7 Pro in December due to a disk crash and after I made the registry edit they went away. Make sure you have the DWORD in the location above and a sufficiently long delay that they don't bug you. I like 5 seconds as I can choose to use them by hovering the mouse that long.
I have run these directions exactly as specified and for longer lengths of time and it worked for a while. But I would say that sometime in the last year the previews came back. I have checked the regedit feature and the numbers are still there, but the previews aren't listening to that command anymore and it's irritating. They do feel like pop-ups (even though they aren't). They are ridiculously annoying as they just cover over something I am looking at simply because I moved my pointer out of the field of view. AAARRRRgghhhh!!!! How hard is it to have to click on them to get them to pop up for those of you that like them? I like the thumbnails on my tool bar, and I like being able to click on them for them to preview. I do not like them to preview UNLESS I click on them. Just like I don't like that if I move a window too far up or down it maximizes and I have no control over that either. I have a small screen since it is a Tablet-PC (not a tablet like Ipad but the PC-tablet). Just like I don't like having no control over having the display set up as I like for it to be set. Why would Microsoft think that less control is better. Yes, making things more idiot-proof is a good thing, but for those of us out here who can find our way around our computers....put us back in the driver's seat please!!!
