Last night my laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit on a Dell Inspirion Laptop performed an automatic update. After rebooting, all my personal files including two 15 page papers I was working on for my degree were deleted.
All my pictures, word docs, and personal files are gone. Only the shell of My Documents folder, including the sub folders I created, is left.
I ran the System Restore going back to a two day old restore point, but non of my personal files were recovered.
I searced the internet w/ " Windows automatic updates deleted/erased all my files" and came up w/ several threads reporting this automatic update issue, but no solutions.
Similar questions have been asked in other parts of this forum w/out satisfactory answers:

I even displayed all hidden folders and searched the entire hard drive w/ *.doc and did not get a single file back!

I don't remember, it was automaticly. I just press update, after that was text: Do not turn computer off.
My documents: My documents/dowloads and on desktop.
Which updates?
Were you composing the work documents when Automatic Updates restarted the computer or...?
When i saw my laptop after the update i was also shocked as all the files and some programs were not showing and the laptop seemed very slow. Just did a restart and everything came back.

Your files are not deleted.
Your files will never be deleted unless you tell Windows you want to delete them.
This Windows 10 Upgrade has been very badly managed, and has cost people a lot of down time and a lot of stress.
Allow me to help:
Please turn on your 'Hidden files' via the File explorer window (any open window in the browser, My Computer, Documents, whatever..).
Once Hidden files is turned on, please go to:
Computer > C:\ > Windows.old > Users
-Please check all the users listed here, then go to:
Computer > C:\ > Windows > Users
-Please check all the users listed here.
Unless you have run Disk Cleanup, other programs, or created roaming profiles your data should be in one of the above locations.
Please understand after the Windows update Microsoft software has put you on a 'Roaming Profile' which is a temporary profile until you sync your settings with a Microsoft Account.
