original title: Windows Update still giving error Code 8024402F Windows Update encountered an unknown error even after fresh install (Win7 Professional x32 and x64)

Hi,

I recently installed Windows 7 (fresh install). Prior to that, I was using Windows Vista and everything was working OK.

I upgraded to Windows 7 Pro x32 bit (using the download version), installed various softwares and everytime I tried updating through Windows update, I get the error Windows could not seach for new updates: An error occured while checking for new updates for your computer. Error(s) found: Code 8024402F Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

I clicked on "Get help with this error" and used the "Windows Update troubleshooter" but it could not find the error.

A week later, the problem still persisted and decided to redownload the entire windows 7 but this time downloading the ISO version and installing the x64 one. As soon as it completed installing (no other software installed even antiviruses), I immediately tried running Windows Update. I got the same error message. Tried doing the "Windows Update troubleshooter" to no avail.

This might also be related. In both installations, I also tried to set up Windows Media Center. When it tried to install PlayReady, it gave me the error: An error encountered while downloading the installation package (Error code: 0x80240022). When I ignore that, the next phase (downloading TV setup data) stops with a one tiny dot in the progress bar-- even after half an hour.

Again, I used to use Windows Vista and it updated fine without any issues. In my Windows 7 installation, I am able to connect to the network, surf the internet, download files, and use various software (e.g., Yahoo Messenger, Skype, Kaspersky Antivirus which updates fine).

Thank you for your information.

Actually I was about to advise of a work around that worked for me, all that was necessary was to turn off the Windows Firewall.

Of course this is not a final solution as it is obviously not a good idea to turn off the firewall while downloading, also after I turn it back on I assume Automatic Updates will again be blocked. A message to the effect that Automatic Updates were being blocked was what first drew my attention to the problem.

I would suggest that someone on this forum who is in contact with the appropriate Microsoft group should pass on this information for a correction to be organised. Now that I can download Updates I should be able to install it. :-)

Hi everyone;

I had the error 8024402f for 2 months. I've been trying all Microsoft Fix and reading all the comments regarding the error in many forums, but did not help. I am pleased to let you know that the solution the_testmaster of April 18, 2013 it has worked successfully. The error I had in 3 different pcs all with windows 7. Follow the steps to the letter, will only add that if you tell the same error after having completed all keep giving "Try Again" button until it comes out the updates. In my case so it was. I hope this review will serve as a utility.

The basics: new pc with Windows 7 Professional installed. I started it up, input the activation code and finished activation of the install. Then clicked the Update link and got error 8024402F. spent 3 hours troubleshooting last night w/o result. I can get online, surf, do anything else required, just not update. Spent 4 hours w/ MS support online today w/o results and am still getting same error code. Awaiting a scheduled call from MS in two days from someone in the support team. (Also reinstalled and reactivated the OS as well, still w/ same results.) By the way, another W7 Prof. unit in my home updates w/o problem, as does the Vista 64bit one.

Meantime, any further suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't know how or why this is related but it only worked for me after I changed the time server to a non-Microsoft one. Specifically I changed it to a NIST server and all of a sudden Windows Update came back to life. Thanks for the suggestion.

I tried so many suggestions and I am grateful for all of them. What I did in the end was purchase Microsoft Office 2013 and the problems I was having with Outlook are no more. I am not a techie and really do not have the time to try 10 different possible options in the hope that they will work. Presently I am living between three countries and two continents so any free time or down time I want to relax or have fun.

I am a Microsoft devotee so not a problem with using Microsoft products but I have to be honest, Microsoft does I feel put their products out too soon and uses the public to help them get it right, look at Windows 8. I bought it and it nearly destroyed my computer so had to take it out maybe by now it is working properly.

Thank you for all of your help to all techies and those reading this I am off again.
