original title: Windows Update still giving error Code 8024402F Windows Update encountered an unknown error even after fresh install (Win7 Professional x32 and x64)

Hi,

I recently installed Windows 7 (fresh install). Prior to that, I was using Windows Vista and everything was working OK.

I upgraded to Windows 7 Pro x32 bit (using the download version), installed various softwares and everytime I tried updating through Windows update, I get the error Windows could not seach for new updates: An error occured while checking for new updates for your computer. Error(s) found: Code 8024402F Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

I clicked on "Get help with this error" and used the "Windows Update troubleshooter" but it could not find the error.

A week later, the problem still persisted and decided to redownload the entire windows 7 but this time downloading the ISO version and installing the x64 one. As soon as it completed installing (no other software installed even antiviruses), I immediately tried running Windows Update. I got the same error message. Tried doing the "Windows Update troubleshooter" to no avail.

This might also be related. In both installations, I also tried to set up Windows Media Center. When it tried to install PlayReady, it gave me the error: An error encountered while downloading the installation package (Error code: 0x80240022). When I ignore that, the next phase (downloading TV setup data) stops with a one tiny dot in the progress bar-- even after half an hour.

Again, I used to use Windows Vista and it updated fine without any issues. In my Windows 7 installation, I am able to connect to the network, surf the internet, download files, and use various software (e.g., Yahoo Messenger, Skype, Kaspersky Antivirus which updates fine).

Thank you for your information.

Actually I was about to advise of a work around that worked for me, all that was necessary was to turn off the Windows Firewall.

Of course this is not a final solution as it is obviously not a good idea to turn off the firewall while downloading, also after I turn it back on I assume Automatic Updates will again be blocked. A message to the effect that Automatic Updates were being blocked was what first drew my attention to the problem.

I would suggest that someone on this forum who is in contact with the appropriate Microsoft group should pass on this information for a correction to be organised. Now that I can download Updates I should be able to install it.  :-)

    Thankyou for your success Tally in the first 24hours 4out of 4 Windows 7 64bit  and 1out of 2 Vista computers now fixed by this extremely simple solution.Spread the word will save alot of strife for alot of people.Thankyou for your reply.

    Many thanks john.. your advise has solved my problem..After many promises of quick fixes & one that crippled my pc, costs many $  ,  & hours of frustration the problem is at last SOLVED.

    All i can say other than thanks   Its Good old Murphy's law.  I did notice that before unchecking the boxes & changing the settings to never check  there were 4 boxes  3 checked and 1 unchecked

    now after resolving the issue there are only 2 boxes to check or uncheck  which ever you prefer.

    Many many thanks again. I must say that my pc configeration is Windows Vista sp 2  32bit.

    Hello Chas,I am in New Zealand as well.Thankyou for reply so far in less than 2days result 4out4 Windows7 64 bit and 3out of 4 Vista32bit computers corrected that is 6outof7 corrected the percentage is high in less than 2days, also showing THE SOLUTION IS STABLE AND EXTREMELY SIMPLE TO DO

    As normally you find a solution then try to produce a theory taking in other successes from other methods.

    Other methods though more complicated apparent do work some of the time 1/ Resetting time

    2/another apparently works some time changing the DNS (although it did not work for me)

    3/Also the blame has been put on the service providers.

    What ever could be common with this lot.While going through the questions on the site about fault code error 8024402F, one person mentioned something that IS THE KEY TO THE PROBLEM as when the problem started to occur.The KEY PROBLEM ALSO ANSWERS WHY THE OTHER TWO METHODS SOMETIMES WORK, and WHY MURPHIES LAW NEARLY ALL OF THE TIME.

    The The THEORY KEY TO THE PROBLEM . In the Months March ,April May, and September October and November. Daylight, Summer Time, Winter Time changes occur at various time through out the world ,which can put my computer time updating no longer matching the time line differential it has with the update server, Because of this NEVER updates any longer as they never agree again.the methods mentioned, eg 1/ resetting the time does correct sometimes,2/ changing the DNS sometimes but say changing DNS to a site in the same country will not work but changing it to a google DNS in a different country may correct.

    But the MOST SUCCESSFUL THE MURPHIES LAW what does it do actually cuts OFF ALL TIES (TIME ETC) THE UPDATE SERVER EG NEVER UPDATE,NEVER LET ANYONE ON THE COMPUTER UPDATE,AND COMPLETELY CUT ANY TIE WITH THE UPDATE SERVER. NOW BY PRESSING THE UPDATE BUTTON AS A MANUAL UPDATE NO LONGER IS TIME RELATED BUT SYN. CORRECTLY AGAIN WITH THE UPDATE SERVER (All is well until maybe the next cycle in about 6 months time or hopefully never again.

    THIS IS ONLY A THEORY BUT AT PRESENT FULFILS The model of what has been actually has been happening.

    Looks Like MURPHIES LAW THOUGH ILLOGICAL as per NORMAL IS ACTUALLY THE MOST LOGICAL SOLUTION OF ALL.

    Brilliant thanks John, worked for me and I'm in NZ too. Nothing else was working. My MS updates stopped as at 21/09/2012 so you are onto something with the DS change I reckon.
