Windows update fails with error code 0x643

I have downloaded the recent Microsoft updates and all but one installed successfully.  The failing update was:  Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 (KB953297);

with an error code of  0x643.

We tried several times to install it and it keeps failing.  It was originally the 3rd update in the list to install.  After failing the first time, it was the only one we were trying to install.  We tried it after the restart required for the other updates.

    If you don't want to go through the tedious process of uninstalling and reinstalling all the Netfx apps, you can try reinstalling the most recent version of 1.1 sp1 over your original version and then immediately run the update (KB953297). The update will then complete.

    e.g. download and install the latest version of 1.1 sp 1 from windows or microsoft official site. If completed this will update the app and allow the subsequent update (KB953297) to install.

    To troubleshoot this issue, you must fix MSI software update registration corruption issues or repair the .NET Framework.

    Method 1: Fix MSI software update registration corruption issues

    To fix MSI software update registration corruption issues automatically, click the Fix it button or link. Click Run in the View Download dialog box, and then follow the steps in the Fix it wizard.

    Adi B.

    Thank you for your suggestion.  If followed your instructions, but the failure remains.  I somehow failed to record the failure/error message.  I will try the procedure again and report the results.

    As an aside, after running the Fix it Wizard, I attempted to obtain online help, but found that support at that link did not include XP.

    Hello,

    Due to the age of this issue and length of this thread, it would be best to create a new thread for this in the following forum:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_update

    Doing so will avoid any confusion between your issue and that of the original poster.

    Best regards,
