Tried reinstalling SP1 for .Net v1.1 and get a "SL889E.tmp has stopped working" error. This is a huge waste of my time.
Windows update fails with error code 0x643
I have downloaded the recent Microsoft updates and all but one installed successfully. The failing update was: Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 (KB953297);
with an error code of 0x643.
We tried several times to install it and it keeps failing. It was originally the 3rd update in the list to install. After failing the first time, it was the only one we were trying to install. We tried it after the restart required for the other updates.

2009-10-18T02:12:16+00:00 What a total waste of time. Were these updates actually tested before being dropped? I have 5 critical updates for a Vista machine that cannot complete. I have two Windows 2003 Servers that no longer notify me when updates are available via Windows Update. Something is amiss - where is the love from Microsoft?

2009-10-19T11:21:01+00:00 Sorry for the delay in getting back to you all, I have been out for the last few days.
JDHack,
I would give System Restore a shot, if that does not work then we can certainly dive in to see what can be done. If System Restore works, it will save us quite a bit of troubleshooting time.
- Click START
- Click 'All Programs'
- Click 'Accessories'
- Click 'System Tools'
- Click 'System Restore'
- Follow the prompts shown to restore your system back to a date before the issue started. Though System Restore does not target personal data, it's recommended that you back up any data like music, pictures, and documents in case something does go wrong.
Tex222,
Updates to .NET Framework can be picky based upon which versions are installed first and in what order. The original instructions at the top of this thread were meant for XP machines. Have you tried the .NET Framework cleanup utility? I would give that a go and then try to reinstall .NET Framework 3.5 from the stand-alone package.
- .NET Framework Cleanup Utility:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/attachment/8904493.ashx
- .NET Framework 3.5 stand-alone installer:
Also, you mentioned 5 updates for Vista. Do you know which exact updates these are? Are these Framework related or something else?
Thanks!
DaemonRoot,
With the updates you posted above, did that resolve the issue on the rest of your machines? If not, let us know which ones.
Thanks for everyones time and participation,
Thanks!
