I purchased my laptop now for about 6 months and the most annoying part is that there is never a low battery notification before my laptop hibernates. It has never shown up once.
The battery meter is active and shown in my system tray. I have gone into power options, changed advanced battery options for low, critical, and reserve levels as well as turned ON low battery notification. In system tray properties > notification area > customize > I have also selected "show icon and notifications".
The windows 7 microsoft website as well as many other forums only suggest to do these 2 things. I HAVE done these two things, as they were the original settings when I bought this laptop new...what else can I do? Is there a patch, download, anything?! I would rather not have to install 3rd party software. I would just like my laptop to function properly. I am not a heavy gamer or student, I just use my laptop to surf the web and watch videos. I also use free Avira antivirus, if any of this is important to why a battery notification won't show up.
Edit: My friend and I bought the exact same computer on the same day. His shows notifications and mine doesn't, so I know it's possible.

Just open your
"control panel"
and then "power option" then
"change advance power settings"
there select the profile you want to active( power saver ,high performance etc.)
Then scroll down to "battery" expand it and find "low battery notification" and turn "on" for both "on battery" and "plugged in" and you will done.
Note :- not necessary to turn it on for "plugged in"
If you've had your laptop or whatever for a while, you may have to get a new battery because even rechargable batteries will eventually stop working. You could find some batteries a lot cheaper on amazon than the origional ones and they work alot better too. I reccomend an Anker battery if that is an option for you. Just remember before the first use to plug it in and keep it charging overnight for the best results.

Found that after a year of wondering why sometimes i got the low & critical battery notifs, and often times i didn't, and thus losing my work multiple times when the laptop would just shut off (not hibernate as I'd set it to). I wish I'd been told of this "known issue" by MS when i got Win 7 with this new laptop! And why no bug fix yet in years...

I have the same issue. I have an Acer Aspire 4730z that came with Windows Vista, but I've upgraded to windows 7. Every single time the power gets too low the laptop hibernates, then I have to wait 5 - 15 minutes for a system resume.
Maybe if there were a way to turn off the display when the power go too low that could be a sort of notification in itself. It doesn't look like there's an easy way to do that though.
I really would like this fixed.
