working solution for your problem

you may want to try this . as some reg values may be missing

open this link http://www.blackviper.com/Windows_7/Services/Windows_Update.htm   http://www.blackviper.com/Windows_7/Services/Windows_Update.htm. down the page you find title

Registry Settings (.reg):

copy text under it into say a text file and change extension to .reg

run the file ,click yes wait confirmation and restart your computer .    then check and see if my solution works for you

I had the same problem, i had previously installed all the updates, but then my machien blue screened on startup so rolled back everything, this seems to have corrupted the file

c:\windows\softwaredistribution\datastore\logs\edb.log

all i did was delete the log file reboot and now windows is updating :)

@Seek wisdom & anyone else with a similar problem: To avoid confusion, please begin your own, new thread in the appropriate forum. State your current IE version and full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2; Vista SP2; Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7 32-bit; Win7 32-bit SP1; Win7 64-bit; Win7 64-bit SP1) in your first post. Thank you.

If you are using a HP laptop then try to download and install the Intel Rapid Storage drivers from the below mentioned link in order to resolve the issue:-

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02219204&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&destPage=document

If you are not using a HP laptop then try to Export the registry keys i.e. Wuauserv, Cryptsvc and BITS from a working computer and then try to import it on the computer which is encountering the issues:-

Export the Registry keys form the below mentioned location and try to merge it on a computer which has this issue:-

Start - Run – regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\bits

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cryptsvc

Before merging it please take the backup of your registry..!

I am sure this will resolve the issue..:)

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7 RC; Win7) when posting in a forum or newsgroup. Please do so in your next reply.

There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall Windows.  A Repair Install will NOT help!

    Also available via...

    Consumer Security Support home page

    https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/

    Otherwise...

    1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually: http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan!  You may need to download the MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

2b. Vista or Win7=> Run this scan instead: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm

    1. Now run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting requested logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

    Checking for/Help with Hijackware:

    http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

**Chances are you will need to seek expert assistance in http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?board=10.0, http://www.spywarewarrior.com/viewforum.php?f=5, http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cleanup, http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php, http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 or other appropriate forums.**

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
