“Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error.

  • Running Windows 7, 32-bi,t on a Lenovo W500. Display Driver: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650.
  • The error message (“display driver stopped responding & has recovered”) follows a system freeze, a short blackout. Then everything works fine.
  • Downloaded the most current driver from the company's Web site.
  • Seeemd to work for a day, but now I'm getting the same behavior.

Hello Crabby Office Lady,

This error can happen because of an outdated video driver, to many programs running at one time or even high CPU activity. There is a link to a KB article on the following post that gives more info on the issue and helps to fix it, see:

    I've combined the registry tweak posted earlier with your nvidia settings.  While it's far too early to declare victory, I've not had display driver crash for a couple of hours.

    Hmm..my video card is now idling at 65 C.  I'm going to have to return to adaptive and hope for a better solution.

    I am having the same problem with my brand new HP ProBook 4421s. Couple of times in a day, it displays "Display Driver AMD Driver stopped responding and has recovered successfully"

    What should be done for a permanent solution. I have read the workarounds but I do not believe that is the right way of solving the problem.

    Currently possible, this was all I could do. use better cooling for your pc and notebooks. And i hope for a better solution too.
