Running Windows 7, 32-bi,t on a Lenovo W500. Display Driver: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650. The error message (“display driver stopped responding & has recovered”) follows a system freeze, a short blackout. Then everything works fine. Downloaded the most current driver from the company's Web site. Seeemd to work for a day, but now I'm getting the same behavior. Crabby Office Lady

Same problem. My Gateway Laptop is brand #$$@$ new. It is not overheating!!

thanx for replying you name ive done it my machine is 6 weeks old and shouldnt require any updates for drivers etc . although your advice is taken onboard and ive allready tried what you suggested to no avail ( direct x and all your drivers are up to date) to explain in more detail i really cant every so often sometimes 3 times a day playing games surfing the net etc all of a sudden for no reason itll say display driver not responding for no reason. Ihave know got even more problems thx studio is going the same way , im just in the middle of returning this to the manafacturer who i hope can sort it out . many thanx for your advice and ill post what happens when the machine is returned to me many thanx

Admittedly, I have no read through all the replies to this thread, but I wanted to say I've had trouble with this as well. I'm running a Radeon 6770M on my three month old HP Pavilion dv7 with Win7 64-bit. There are very specific times that this error occurs for me. When I am playing a game (any game, save for The Sims 3) and press the alt+tab code to select a different window, probably 7 times out of 10 the screen will blink, black out, and then that fun little bubble pops up telling me it's stopped responding and recovered. It's done this since I got it back in mid April. For a period of time the problem stopped, and I thought it must have been something in one of my most recent windows updates. Then I started playing The Sims 3 and this problem happened at least once every 5 minutes, sometimes more than that (as in like every minute or so), and I didn't have to be doing anything at all, and I could be sitting here minding my own business, staring listlessly, and it would blank out and then "recover". I seriously doubt it has anything to do with heat, my laptop is constantly on a fan and right next to my AC unit. Since then, the problem alternates between mildly annoying to entirely infuriating, and I've downloaded all the driver updates I can think of to no avail. I hope a solution for this is found soon, and though I doubt it, hope the details of my problem might somehow be helpful.

This error can happen because of an outdated video driver, to many programs running at one time or even high CPU activity. There is a link to a KB article on the following post that gives more info on the issue and helps to fix it, see:
