“Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error.

  • Running Windows 7, 32-bi,t on a Lenovo W500. Display Driver: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650.
  • The error message (“display driver stopped responding & has recovered”) follows a system freeze, a short blackout. Then everything works fine.
  • Downloaded the most current driver from the company's Web site.
  • Seeemd to work for a day, but now I'm getting the same behavior.

Hello Crabby Office Lady,

This error can happen because of an outdated video driver, to many programs running at one time or even high CPU activity. There is a link to a KB article on the following post that gives more info on the issue and helps to fix it, see:

    I just reinstalled windows, was tired of all the BS and it worked no problems, at all I am so relieved. I just hope when I install new drivers that this will not return.

    It appears as though the Nvidia driver (258.96) has an incompatibility on some faster machines with Windows 7's "Desktop Windows Manager" (dwm.exe). If so, until either Microsoft or Nvidia provides a fix , mine is to go to task manager and stop the "dwm.exe" process. You'll have to do it two times, as it will not completely shutdown after the first try. That may solve your problem for now. One other thing: I recommend  setting Vertical Sync to "ON". (In case you have timing issues,.)    In my case it was Zune that didn't like dwm.exe.(Also, double-check the rest of your Nvidia Control Panel settings.) You should be able to fix it.

    I have windows 7 64bit and I went to dell download and downloaded 1580-A07 and R291793  drivers and that corrected the problem.
