“Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error.

  • Running Windows 7, 32-bi,t on a Lenovo W500. Display Driver: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650.
  • The error message (“display driver stopped responding & has recovered”) follows a system freeze, a short blackout. Then everything works fine.
  • Downloaded the most current driver from the company's Web site.
  • Seeemd to work for a day, but now I'm getting the same behavior.

Hello Crabby Office Lady,

This error can happen because of an outdated video driver, to many programs running at one time or even high CPU activity. There is a link to a KB article on the following post that gives more info on the issue and helps to fix it, see:

    Hi all,

    same problem for my HP EliteBook 8540w running WIN7 64-bit, NVIDIA QUADRO FX800M.

    It happens 5-6 times per day. Latest driver installed.

    I am having the exact same problems with my HP mini 5101 netbook. This happens every 30 mins now and then and have no idea why.

    It's definitely not running hot as a lot of the underneath is cool to the touch.

    I have all the updates! We all need a fix not a "maybe"

    I had the same issue up until a few minutes ago! Tuns out ATI video cards just run VERY hot. I have an aftermarket heatsink on my HD 2900 PRO and it kept popping the same error up. It was happening more than once every 5 minutes. Ran CPUID and it says the VPU is running at 65c even though the rest of the system is at 25-30º (not insanely hot, but 10º over stock idle temps). Pulled off the side panel and put a fan up against it, and the errors have declined to once in a half hour... Could be a coincidence, but I don't know.

    Yes, same problem here, brand new dell xps running windows 7 64 bit with i7 processor. Not overheated either.  I have been surfing around, this has been an ongoing issue for over 2 years with the introduction of vista.  Multitudes of folks out there going crazy trying to figure it out to no avail.

    The only solutions so far are to cripple your display settings, but even that doesn't always work. I refuse to do that. How about a real fix please?

    Also, many folks who upgraded from XP and never had a problem beforehand. Now they do. So stop trying to blame it on the hardware.

    Typical.
