“Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error.

  • Running Windows 7, 32-bi,t on a Lenovo W500. Display Driver: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650.
  • The error message (“display driver stopped responding & has recovered”) follows a system freeze, a short blackout. Then everything works fine.
  • Downloaded the most current driver from the company's Web site.
  • Seeemd to work for a day, but now I'm getting the same behavior.

Hello Crabby Office Lady,

This error can happen because of an outdated video driver, to many programs running at one time or even high CPU activity. There is a link to a KB article on the following post that gives more info on the issue and helps to fix it, see:

    I am getting this problem too.  It seems to only happen when I try to play games.  I upgraded XP to windows 7 this week and these problems are my only complaint I have with 7.  My setup is cooled just fine, no overheating is detected.  No overclocking on anything.  I am getting very frustrated and might just go back to XP if we cannot find a solution...

    Yes I get this too sometimes, when playing TF2, but not L4D2 surprisingly, or when using the unreal editor 3. Video card is NOT overclocked and does NOT overheat, my system is plenty cool, big-____ cooling fan inside my case and lots of airflow, good cable management. I heard that if you use non-aero themes in Win 7 it'll stop doing it, but I don't wanna do that, it's ugly! Microsoft has to fix this ____ already!

    im getting the same problem on a Gateway FX i7 with a 5770 video card.  Only happens every once in awhile and always while browsing the web.  By once in awhile i mean like once every few days so not a major problem but this computer is 2 weeks old and shouldnt have issues.  Drivers are up to date and unless i got a lemon computer im pretty sure its not overheating.  Ill keep checking back here for future answers because ive not found one yet!

    Ditto on the kernel crash,

    I'm running Win7 32 bit on a core 2 duo 2.4GHz and a Nvidia 8600GT w/ latest drivers.  Quite a ____-off - no fix in sight?
