“Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error.

  • Running Windows 7, 32-bi,t on a Lenovo W500. Display Driver: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650.
  • The error message (“display driver stopped responding & has recovered”) follows a system freeze, a short blackout. Then everything works fine.
  • Downloaded the most current driver from the company's Web site.
  • Seeemd to work for a day, but now I'm getting the same behavior.

Hello Crabby Office Lady,

This error can happen because of an outdated video driver, to many programs running at one time or even high CPU activity. There is a link to a KB article on the following post that gives more info on the issue and helps to fix it, see:

    You're right. I thought this worked but I didn't. I just had the same problem happen again. I would still recommend using the "High Performance" power option because it has seemed to make me get this error less frequently.

    I have the same problem. I made clean install of Windows 7 64 bit, use the latest driver of my GeForce 9800GT, latest chipset driver, latest driver of everything... and when I play video, in 10s i got this message, and after a while, blue screen.

    Same problem with Vista 64 bit

    I use a nvidia 285 gtx and have the most recent drivers as of writing this.  I can ALWAYS replicate this problem by using the EVGA Precision (a tool that allows you to adjust GPU fan speed/memory speed/etc).  I have a saved profile that bumps up the memory and fan speed.  After doing this and then loading a youtube video or video game, my screen will go black and then I will get the message.

    After that I usually don't encounter the problem.  However, I have been getting this error even without using EVGA Precision and running on stock speed.  I am using Windows 7 64-bit also.  It gets really annoying when I'm playing a game or something and it does this.  Sometimes I'll even get a BSOD.

    After doing some research, it appears a good percentage of the time its your memory.  I decreased the speed of my memory and the problem went away.
