“Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error.

  • Running Windows 7, 32-bi,t on a Lenovo W500. Display Driver: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650.
  • The error message (“display driver stopped responding & has recovered”) follows a system freeze, a short blackout. Then everything works fine.
  • Downloaded the most current driver from the company's Web site.
  • Seeemd to work for a day, but now I'm getting the same behavior.

Hello Crabby Office Lady,

This error can happen because of an outdated video driver, to many programs running at one time or even high CPU activity. There is a link to a KB article on the following post that gives more info on the issue and helps to fix it, see:

    I think the program is problematic on windows is the desktop window manager. This program can be found in c:\windows\system32\dwm.exe. This program takes the allocation of more performance to be run properly.

    1. Open your Nvidia Control Panel
    2. Go to Manage 3D Settings. You will see 2 tabs, Global Settings and Program Settings.
    3. In Program Settings, add dwm.exe (Desktop Windows Manager) from C:\Windows\System32

        directory and set Power Management Mode becomes Prefer maximum performance for this

        program.

    And yes, your video card is now idling at 65 C. Provide better cooler for your notebook or PC.

    Hello, I am hoping my solution works for other people. My display driver collapsed at every pressure. Now with only one click issue is SOLVED for me. Here is the solution: Open ATI ccc (Catalyst control center), latest version. Open, Graphics -- power play -- un-click 'enable power play option'. That is it. It saved me from the ****.

    WORKED, WINDOWS 7 ATI 1GB DELL XPS, it was a simple click. Thanks a lot man.

    Same here, Dell Precision M6400, Win 7 64-bit, SP1, Nvidia Quadro FX2700.  HWMonitor says the Nvidia temperature has never exceeded 56 C. Have just installed the latest driver from Dell, so I'm waiting to see. Have also requested support from Dell, waiting to see on that too.
