“Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error.

  • Running Windows 7, 32-bi,t on a Lenovo W500. Display Driver: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650.
  • The error message (“display driver stopped responding & has recovered”) follows a system freeze, a short blackout. Then everything works fine.
  • Downloaded the most current driver from the company's Web site.
  • Seeemd to work for a day, but now I'm getting the same behavior.

Hello Crabby Office Lady,

This error can happen because of an outdated video driver, to many programs running at one time or even high CPU activity. There is a link to a KB article on the following post that gives more info on the issue and helps to fix it, see:

    Following a suggestion from someone else I changed my display to 16 bit high colour instead of 32 bit true colour.  I think this has solved the problem, but I'm not totally 100% sure which is why I haven't posted this yet.  But I think it has worked.  you need to restart your computer after making the change too.

    One thing I do know is that it definitely only happens on the internet and usually when I'm trying to watch a video - BBC news website.

    I am thinking that if the colour settings change is the answer and as I know it is internet mostly video, Firefox as well as IE, linked that it may be something to do with a video plug in.

    I also have a HP EliteBook 8540w, except I have the ATI/AMD graphics card...  same problem.  Have you found a fix for this yet?

    Better not to change reg values.

    Common values are between 2 and 5 seconds.

    Please note that 2 seconds is actually a high value.

    I have a Fujitsu T4220 which had the display driver problems mentioned here.  They seemed to have occured when I pressed the enter key like it was an execution problem. 

    When I booted in Safe Mode the problems disappeared.

    Then I read  "Chen YF" suggestion  & changed the display color as "High Color (16 bit)" instead of "True Color (32 bit)"  and the problem went away.

    Can someone tell me in layman terms why this fixed the problem.
