The error message (“display driver stopped responding & has recovered”) follows a system freeze, a short blackout. Then everything works fine. Hello, I am hoping my solution works for other people. My display driver collapsed at every pressure. Now with only one click issue is SOLVED for me. Here is the solution: Open ATI ccc (Catalyst control center), latest version. Open, Graphics -- power play -- un-click 'enable power play option'. That is it. It saved me from the ****. WORKED, WINDOWS 7 ATI 1GB DELL XPS, it was a simple click. Thanks a lot man. I have been dealing with the "display driver recovered" error for 2 years!!! First I had two NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 cards pushing to 3 monitors. The errors were once a day. Then I switched to one Radeon HD 6790 card pushing to 3 monitors (2 DVIs and 1 mini-display port) and the errors were once every 5 minutes. I am not a gamer but I do watch and edit videos. Anyway, the whole issue is very very frustrating. Plus, destroys my productivity. I have since taken the above advice. Using Catalyst Control Centre Version 2011.0728.1756.30366 - go to Performance - AMD Overdrive - unclick enable AMD Overdrive - click apply. Reboot system. I will let you know the results. De-enabling the PowerPlay option in CCC(Pro) (ref vivizi post 8-16-11) seems to have worked for me. I suspect that the PowerPlay function is conflicting with a similar function built in to Windows 7 but it may well work for some other reason. My "display driver---has recovered" always seemed to appear when using vertical scrolling. ATI 3670

I had the same problem (only once so far) after downloading a large (about 100MB plus) update for my AMD graphics card from using windows update. I had it while using youtube.

The replies from Peter and Joseph sum it up - The TDR error invariably points to the graphics drivers as they are the last man standing when the machine crashes. This does not mean the graphics drivers are at fault. There are many possibilities - Yes, a corrupt driver install ( not bad drivers - I've never had bad graphics drivers in just on ten years from either ATI or Nvidia, only a corrupt install). A faulty graphics card a definite possibility, but this has to be verified. Commonly the card will overheat or produce artifacts in all games. One example of so many other possibilities for a TDR. "maybe the USB hub is eating too much power and the vid card isnt able to compensate. Unplugged everything. Issue stopped. Likely due to a power consumption issue but I figured I'd pass this along in hopes it helps someone. " If you're still there Peter - What brand psu and what are your full system specs ? The sad thing is, the TDR was supposed to prevent premature BSOD's (so is my understanding), but it is a failed concept, which seems at least, to cause more confusion and head banging then BSOD's did with XP.

I finally just had to replace the video card, wasn't worth the aggrevation

This error can happen because of an outdated video driver, to many programs running at one time or even high CPU activity. There is a link to a KB article on the following post that gives more info on the issue and helps to fix it, see:
