  • Running Windows 7, 32-bi,t on a Lenovo W500. Display Driver: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650.
  • The error message (“display driver stopped responding & has recovered”) follows a system freeze, a short blackout. Then everything works fine.
  • Downloaded the most current driver from the company's Web site.
  • Seeemd to work for a day, but now I'm getting the same behavior.

Hello Crabby Office Lady,

This error can happen because of an outdated video driver, to many programs running at one time or even high CPU activity. There is a link to a KB article on the following post that gives more info on the issue and helps to fix it, see:

I dealt with "Display driver stopped responding" error prompts and blue screens for about three months before finding the solution for my Gateway desktop FX6860 with Windows 7, i7 processor, 8 GB RAM and an AMD Radeon HD 6750 graphics card. I tried everything. Finally after reading and rereading what seemed like every tech forum on the planet – and trying out every fix known to mankind -- I found a post that said it’s a RAM issue. The poster, who had a computer similar to mine, said he simply removed one of the memory cards and that all of his problems disappeared.

So in a process that took less than 10 minutes, I unplugged my computer and opened the tower to carefully remove one of the four DDR3 memory cards – leaving me with 6GB of RAM instead of the 8GB that came from the factory. When I reconnected everything and started up the PC, it worked perfectly. That was about two weeks ago. I haven’t experienced a blue screen or “Display driver” prompt since. I also haven’t detected any difference in my computer’s speed despite the absence of 2GB of RAM.

Apparently, my computer was unable to produce enough consistent power for 8GB of RAM without me messing with the clocking of my CPU (something I didn’t feel comfortable doing). But by reducing the RAM, my computer is now able to produce the necessary power with consistency. In other words, my graphics card isn’t “timing out” or freezing any more. Hope this helps!

    Installed Windows 7

    No problems.

Installed the latest Nvidia graphics driver, problems started.

I have tried many of the posted solutions.

    Problem still existed.

I uninstalled the Nvidia graphics driver.

    Rebooted (twice).

    Problem has gone away.

When I click on the display adapter in Device Manager it says, 'NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM v1.1)

No more Nvidia drivers for me thanks.

I too just had an incidence of this a couple of weeks back

Win 7 Home premium (no SP1)

    Core i5 760

    6 GB memory

Radeon ATI 5450 512 mb GPU.

    ORIGINAL DRIVER

I install ALL MS security patches so they are up to date. I have not opted to install non security updates though. EXCEPT .NET updates.

So far only one incident has not occurred since.

But somehow I would bet it will happen again.

I keep getting the feeling that this is related to some update.

Hi, I will try all of the things you suggested. Here's hoping that I can start to play my games again.

    Thanks, Anne
