“Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error.

  • Running Windows 7, 32-bi,t on a Lenovo W500. Display Driver: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650.
  • The error message (“display driver stopped responding & has recovered”) follows a system freeze, a short blackout. Then everything works fine.
  • Downloaded the most current driver from the company's Web site.
  • Seeemd to work for a day, but now I'm getting the same behavior.

Hello Crabby Office Lady,

This error can happen because of an outdated video driver, to many programs running at one time or even high CPU activity. There is a link to a KB article on the following post that gives more info on the issue and helps to fix it, see:

    I have been having this problem in the past few months with my 1 year old Dell XPS - Windows 7 computer. It seems to happen when an internet page is loading a video or when my kids play online video games. Dell and I have tried to update drivers. They have replaced the video card and now tell me it's a software and not a hardware issue. Extremely frustrating!

    I'm pretty sure this is my problem also, my machine runs very cool, so heat is not the problem and the crashes always occur when doing basic things like watching youtube vids or playing a browser based java game. I have an nVidia gtx 580 card and never have any problems playing very graphically intensive games on ultra settings but simple stuff it apparently can't handle. Hopefully MS fixes this, it is extremely aggravating.

    I have got the solution finally

    Go to Nivada control panel --> 3D setting --> Set Physical configuration.

    Select Physx Configuration and chose NVIDIA QUADRO FX800M instead of the Automatic.

    save changes and Exit :)

    Same problem ... but resolved for my Pc.

    Asus rampageIV Extreme

    Core i7 3960X

    Evga GTX 590

    Ripjaws Z 4x4 16GB 2133Mhz

    Windows 7 x64

    Samsung 830 128GB

    Problem resolved by overclocking cpu to 4.250 using Ai Asus Suite II TurboV EVO. <---- included in my driver disk.

    soooo happy.  overclock and resolve. try it
