“Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error.

  • Running Windows 7, 32-bi,t on a Lenovo W500. Display Driver: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650.
  • The error message (“display driver stopped responding & has recovered”) follows a system freeze, a short blackout. Then everything works fine.
  • Downloaded the most current driver from the company's Web site.
  • Seeemd to work for a day, but now I'm getting the same behavior.

Hello Crabby Office Lady,

This error can happen because of an outdated video driver, to many programs running at one time or even high CPU activity. There is a link to a KB article on the following post that gives more info on the issue and helps to fix it, see:

    Found my fix for this.

    TURN OFF POWER MIZER!

    Based on what I saw, it looked like a power resource issue, rather than a power supply problem.

    Works great!

    I hope this helps someone else.  Just remember to 'run as admin' when you run the tool, and to run it again if you update/re-install.

    Same problem

    New motherboard, not an overheat problem.

    NVidia GeForce GTX 560Ti with latest driver.

    Memtest86+ shows there is a RAM modul malfunction - I think it causes the problem in my case.

    I suggest always check your hardware before You start looking for a software solution.

    I have an HD 3450 video card and kept getting the display driver stopped error or BSOD.

    To correct

    1. Used compressed air to clean all fans
    2. I also noticed that the heatsink on the video card had loosened up. I removed the card and was able to correct by inserting a small plasting tie into ends of each of the four plastic clips, that hold the heatsink to the card (you may be able to get the clips from AMD).
    3. Put back the card and it has been working fine since
