Running Windows 7, 32-bi,t on a Lenovo W500. Display Driver: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650. The error message (“display driver stopped responding & has recovered”) follows a system freeze, a short blackout. Then everything works fine. Downloaded the most current driver from the company's Web site. Seeemd to work for a day, but now I'm getting the same behavior. Crabby Office Lady

Dude your right and the answer is NOT a Heat Issue Whoever said that doesnt know what they are talking about. It comes from the way that Ati Throttles their driver on the desktop so that they're considered to be a "Green" solution. (For those worried about Power consumption.)the ATI 5770 is rated at 300MHz(18Watts) on the desktop. Try the solutions below. It's a fairly new thing but all the drivers have it now. here is the fix taken from an amd site on the fix.. Open CCC and switch to ATI Overdrive Unlock and enable Overdrive Go to Options/Profiles/Profile Manager and create a new profile called, let's say, STABLE. Save the new profile. But DO NOT ACTIVATE the profile. Now go to C:\Users{YourUserName}\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Profiles folder ( I assume C: is your system drive ) Note: You should have " show hidden files " turned on to see the folder. Open the .xml file named STABLE with notepad. Change the values of the idle Core clock and Memory clock speeds below Feature name="CoreClockTarget_0" Property name="Want_0" value="40000" note: previous value should be "15700" Feature name="MemoryClockTarget_0" Property name="Want_0" value="90000" note: previous value should be "30000" Save the file and close it. Go back to CCC and activate the profile. This will make the card idle at 400 MHz core clock and 900 MHz memory clock. The speed change is immediate. You can see the speeds onder CCC Overdrive section. Please note this change increases graphic card temperature by 6 to 7 degrees C at idle. oh yea if you dont have CCC you can use a program like MSI Afterburner to turn your clocks up manually...this is for the ATI VGA cards...you may assume that Nvidia also underclocks their Cards to you can try the MSI solution as well just turn your Core Clock up by, Say 100MHz or so, til the driver stops crashing... Note that you should use ATI CCC(Catalyst Control Center)Make sure to turn of Catalyst AI) to solve your isssues...Thank you and Have a nice Day...happy new year...

maxstr - my computer has been having similar problems. they didn't start until new years day. have you found a solution? i can't keep it running long enough to download anything. the display will either shut down to the 'recovery' format, shut off to power save mode (and not come back on), or shut the computer down altogether. i'm curious to know if there is a correlation between these problems and the new year.

I have the same problem, Win7, 64 bit, NVidia GEForce 9800 on HP Pavilion Elite M9450f. I upgraded to Win7 about a year ago, upgraded my sound card a few months ago, no problems until two days ago. I don't think anything is overheating, and I know that the case and vents are clean. I've tried updating drivers, rolling back drivers, using default drivers, the regedit entries, increasing performance settings. It's mostly happening in Second Life, where I have a small business and nonprofit activities, and this is a serious problem for me. I'd upgrade my graphics card, or even get a new computer, if I could be reasonably sure it would fix the problem, and judging by the posts to this forum, there's no such guarantee. This error can happen because of an outdated video driver, to many programs running at one time or even high CPU activity. There is a link to a KB article on the following post that gives more info on the issue and helps to fix it, see:
