  • Running Windows 7, 32-bi,t on a Lenovo W500. Display Driver: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650.
  • The error message (“display driver stopped responding & has recovered”) follows a system freeze, a short blackout. Then everything works fine.
  • Downloaded the most current driver from the company's Web site.
  • Seeemd to work for a day, but now I'm getting the same behavior.

Hello Crabby Office Lady,

This error can happen because of an outdated video driver, to many programs running at one time or even high CPU activity. There is a link to a KB article on the following post that gives more info on the issue and helps to fix it, see:

My WMP videos were crashing, "Device driver AMD has stopped responding and recovered", AND in Device Manager is showed the monitor as "Generic PnP", w/an ancient MS driver from 2006. I have the Dell ST2220L HD monitor. When the drones @ Dell burned the disc, the AMD Catalyst Control Center Install Manger wasn't there. So, I had to use the old Win Modify/Repair/Remove BS. Happily, when I removed the AMD app, the whole sled crashed. Rebooted w/System Recovery Disk, ran latest AMD CCC sofware suite download. Videos since then have been playing back w/o crashing, but that is only from this AM. Only time will tell.

THEN, I had do download and install the correct Dell monitor driver so the Device manager would properly identify it, it also updated the MS driver to a May 2010 version.

We pay big bucks for this stuff, and you have to be almost an entry level programmer to get them to work right. I never call Customer Support anymore, these forums and my experience since using MS-DOS serve me better. So, unless someone like Crabby Office Lady has been a gear head for almost 20 years like me, what is she supposed to do???

My nephew is a programmer, and has been begging me to move to Linux. He even bought me the retail version of release 7, but I didn't try it. I know I could dual boot this sled and use both OS's, but I'm going to keep using my hard earned hammer and keep beating Bill's stuff into shape until I get it to work correctly. It puts the novice in a terrible position, and Dell should be held mostly responsible though, IMHO. Bill comes in a close second.    US Outpost 31

If you read this thread you will see that it happens on other video cards as well.
