I solved this problem by going into device manager and uninstalling the usb drivers. Then when I plugged the hard drive back in it reinstalled the driver and worked.

I went to do something with partition magic (it recognized something with the pointers I believe, so I allowed it to automatically fix the error) and now I'm not even able to access Partition Disk #0, Partition #1 which is a drive that I used to store data (No OS). It doesn't appear in 'My Computer', but does appear in Disk Management but it doesn't seem like I can do anything with it besides delete the partition. There's a lot of data that I have stored and I don't want to lose it all.
I used a partition tool to find out what sectors each of the partitions are starting at and for one of them it's sector 15 and the other it is sector 33. I'm not sure if that has any significance to my problem, but just thought I'd let it be known.

- Error Message: "The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-to-date. Refresh the view by using the refresh task. If the problem persists close the Disk Management console, then restart Disk Management or restart the computer.

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Answers Community.
Try using diskpart to assign a drive letter to Disk #0, Partition #1.
· Click Start Orb > type diskpart
· Right-click diskpart in results above > click Run as administrator
· Once diskpart loads type list volume, press enter
You should notice that you will see your partition that you use for your data, it should not show a drive letter assigned to it.
· Type select volume 6 **** (replace 6 with the volume number assigned to the partition in question)
· Type assign letter Z (replace Z with the letter that you want to assign to it)
When you look in Computer, you should be able to see your partition.

Finally got work around on this issue.. but its little tricky..
I did it through Ubuntu so you also need to download Ubuntu live image ISO and burn in ur CD or DVD..
Boot your system through that CD or DVD and select live image or Try Ubuntu from boot menu...
When you see you Desktop screen create folder on desktop (E.g. Ddrive) which will used to mount your damaged drive..
Now press Altr + Cntrl + F5 which will take you to command line interface.. and follow below commands..
- "Sudo fdisk -l" will list your partition. Now check partition name which is damaged and you want to recover... IF you dont get clear then use below command to see partition with label
- "Sudo blkid" (Eg. Partition name /dev/hda5 which is damaged and i want to recover)
- now mount this damaged drive with folder which we have created on Deskop (Ddrive)
"sudo mount -t ntfs -o nls=utf8.umask=0222 /dev/hda5 /desktop/Ddrive"
and here you done all steps... press Altr + Cntrl + F7 to go back to Desktop and double click on Ddrive to see your all damaged drive data....

First, my problem. When I tried to attach a VHD file, Windows wouldn't assign it a drive letter.
When I tried to assign the drive letter manually, the operation would fail and I would receive the following error:
"The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-to-date. Refresh the view by using the refresh task. If the problem persists close the Disk Management console, then restart Disk Management or restart the computer."
I also couldn't plug in a USB Thumb Drive or USB External Drive without having the same problem.
It was because the following registry keys were completely missing.

I exported the above keys from another Server 2008 R2 Enterprise
and imported them into my Server 2008 R2 Enterprise.
My problem was solved immediately. I didn't have to reboot.
Below is the contents of the CurrentControlSet .reg file I imported.
It may be all that's needed. However, it wouldn't be hard to modify for ControlSet001 & ControlSet002.
I'm about 99% sure - that most (or all) of the subkeys 0000-0027 are unnecessary. I left them in for now.
