I updated 11 windows xp updates today from Microsoft.com and restarted my pc like it asked me to. (There has definitely been absolutely NO CHANGE in my computer software or hardware installation apart from this updates)
From then on, Windows cannot restart again! It is stopping at the blue screen with the following message:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer.
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
Technical Information:STOP: 0x00000050 (0x80097004, 0x00000001, 0x80515103, 0x00000000).
I tried all kinds of restarting option namely, safe modes etc. but everything is returning to the blue screen.
I hope Microsoft technical support has an answer as to how to resolve this problem.
Please respond if anyone has an answer.

If you are not experiencing the Blue Screen on reboot and you have successfully installed the KB977165 update you do not need to do anything.
The only situation in which you need uninstall the update is if you are experiencing blue screens on reboot.

I wanted to thank everyone for the great information and discusion in this thread!
We have found that there is only one patch that requires un-installation to resolve the blue screen issue. KB977165 is the patch in question, the other patches do not seem to cause the blue screen behaviour and do not need to be uninstalled.
With that in mind, here's the updated solution steps:
Once you are in the Repair Screen..
IMPORTANT: If you are able to uninstall the patch and get back into Windows, in order to stay protected you can use the following automated solution which secures your PC against the vulnerabilities that are resolved with KB977165 until you can successfully get the update installed without the blue screens.

Hey Leroy, I am reading all the posts and I have the same problem as you. The stop error is the same, the mup.sys is the same stop point and the suggested repairs also are not working and i am unable to reinstall windows to the C drive, Dell Diagnostics states that my C drive works without issue but windows install CDs do not see my hard drive.
Also spent quite some time on the phone with MS with no resolution.
Did you find a solution?
Okay so based on the facts that we received the same errors and that removing the windows update did not work for us because our working hard drives were not found
I am going to make an assumption that you have a SATA hard drive as I do. If that is the case than the drivers for the hard drive are the issue.
I will also assume that if you have a SATA hard drive that you also hae a fairly new computer that most likely does nto have a floppy drive.
IF you have a floppy drive, get out your MS reinstall CD and also your driver CD.
Use another computer to put the drivers for your hard drive on a floppy (a USB floppy would most likely be the best bet here)
Then when prompted to install windows over a previous installation (we are not reformatting your hard drive) you want to press F6 (or the equvalent for your install disk) to install drivers for your mass storage devce)
From here I cannot help you other than to say that we believe you will be fine to reinstall windows from here.
However, we were not lucky enough to have access to floppy drives.
SO wewere lucky enough to have a IDE hard drive in the attic. So we installed this as a secondary drive and installed windows on that hard drive. Be sure nto to chage the defalt drive from teh sata drive. when prompted what drive to boot from or install windows to make sure it is the IDE drive.
From there we reinstalled windows on the SATA drive that was now the E drive.
We will disconnect the IDE drive, toss it back into the attic and were good to go.
We are actually working this fix right now and are not done but once we loaded windows to the IDE drive were are now able to access the SATA drive.
