I updated 11 windows xp updates today from Microsoft.com and restarted my pc like it asked me to. (There has definitely been absolutely NO CHANGE in my computer software or hardware installation apart from this updates)

From then on, Windows cannot restart again! It is stopping at the blue screen with the following message:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer.

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Technical Information:STOP: 0x00000050 (0x80097004, 0x00000001, 0x80515103, 0x00000000).

I tried all kinds of restarting option namely, safe modes etc.  but everything is returning to the blue screen.

I hope Microsoft technical support has an answer as to how to resolve this problem.

Please respond if anyone has an answer.

Thanks

If you are not experiencing the Blue Screen on reboot and you have successfully installed the KB977165 update you do not need to do anything.

The only situation in which you need uninstall the update is if you are experiencing blue screens on reboot.

I hope this helps.

Thanks,

Kevin

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to thank everyone for the great information and discusion in this thread!

We have found that there is only one patch that requires un-installation to resolve the blue screen issue. KB977165 is the patch in question, the other patches do not seem to cause the blue screen behaviour and do not need to be uninstalled.

With that in mind, here's the updated solution steps:

  1. Boot from your Windows XP CD or DVD and start the recovery console (see this Microsoft article for help with this step)

Once you are in the Repair Screen..

  1. Type this command: CHDIR $NtUninstallKB977165$\spuninst
  2. Type this command: BATCH spuninst.txt
  3. When complete, type this command: exit

IMPORTANT: If you are able to uninstall the patch and get back into Windows, in order to stay protected you can use the following automated solution which secures your PC against the vulnerabilities that are resolved with KB977165 until you can successfully get the update installed without the blue screens.

Please see the link below for the article describing the vulnerability that is fixed with KB977165 and how you can get protected without installing the actual KB update:

I also wanted to thank maxyimus for the great thread, and LThibx for their participation as well!

Thanks,

Kevin

Sorry, about last comment - not posted to these forums before - clicked the wrong button!

Happily, though, I think that the answer I proposed was in fact correct - so MANY thanks to all who responded in this thread!

Went visiting my in-laws last night and my niece turned up with her Dell Vostro 1510 laptop (XP Pro SP3) suffering from this blue screen problem:

           STOP 0x0000007E (0xC000001D,0x80537008,0xBA4CF508,0xBA4CF204)

When I got the PC back home, I Googled for a bit and then tried:

    * Booting into Safe Mode - blue screen

    * Booting from Windows XP CD - failed

    * Booting from Windows XP CD, and with the SATA drivers for the PC sitting ready in a floppy disk (downloaded from Dell - Intel Matrix Storage

       Manager) - failed

    * Googled again and alighted on this thread. Hooray!

    * Removed the HDD from the laptop, attached it to one of my PCs and carried out a full check disk, then scanned it with Kaspersky Internet

Security Suite 2009. The scan ran for many hours but did find and fix LOTS of infections, one of which was of the key SATA driver, iastor.sys,

that lives in Windows\System32\drivers, and which Kaspersky deleted.

    * Replaced iastor.sys with the one I'd got from Dell

    * Put the HDD back in the laptop, booted into Safe Mode and, hooray, it booted!

    * Uninstalled Limewire - which, judging what Kaspersky found, was how the infections came in.

    * Booted into Safe Mode with Networking, installed, updated and ran Malware Bytes - found 64 further infections

    * Rebooted - at Malware Bytes requested and then started in Safe Mode with Networking again and installed, updated and ran SpyBot Search and

Destroy. This is still running and has currently found another 30-plus nasties that I'll get it to fix.

My assumption is that everything will be fine with this machine once SpyBot has finished and once I've then fixed the other things that the nasties have broken, such as not being able to use Ctrl-Alt-Del or access Task Manager by right-clicking Windows toolbar.

I will report back on any issues I find and, if people want, on how I fixed the stuff I found broken.

Two clients computers, both XP media center HPs with restore on disk partitions.

After trying 3 different xp CDs one finally got me into the repair console. Tried uninstalling just kb977165 first. That didn't work. Tried uninstalling all of the last updates, that didn't work either. I have opened a case but Microsoft's answer is to send me an XP media center cd to try. I don't see how this will make a difference either. I can use Reatogo X-PE to boot and save the data from these two systems but I guarantee I have two clients that are extremely displeased with Microsoft and will be twice as mad at what this is going to cost them. Microsoft is well aware of the problem. Sending me an XP media center CD is NOT a solution and obviously uninstalling the updates is not a solution on all systems either. How about a working solution to this problem MS?
