How do I get ahold of Mr. Gates so he can send me a check to reimburse me for the expense of having a technician fix my computer due to Microsoft windows update? It is bad enough that we need to protect our computers from viruses - now we have
to protect them from Windows updates.
This is NOT a windows update issue. Currently, it's believed that machines affected by this were victims of a dormant rootkit that had patched the atapi.sys or iastor.sys files. Due to the nature of the rootkit, attempting to patch the rooted file led to the
blue-screen. Computers without the rootkit patched just fine.
Most people who have a rootkit like this are people who ignore best practices and run as a full administrator in XP. If you run in XP as an administrator, you are just waiting to be rooted.
And to the fellow that is touting Ubuntu: I love linux myself, and I run Ubuntu on one of my machines, but it's not for everyone. An ubuntu linux install out of the box, so to speak, does not include MP3 support (that's not free), DVD support (unless they have
changed this, that also is not free), or Flash support. It's not for everyone. And hopping on a windows answer board and saying "lol install linux" doesn't help anyone.
To the guy who asked about Games on Linux, there are some compatability layers out there like Cedega and WINE that attempt to run Windows apps and games within Linux, and some games do work well. But most games will NOT run on Linux. So please, don't run out
there an install Linux unless you are sure you want to. Get someone who knows to hook you up with a live CD or perhaps a Dual Boot setup and try before you buy.
