I have the same exact problem with two computers.
Getting the BSOD with the 0x0000007E error, on two Windows XP Professional machines. (I brought them back to my office for repairs from two separate people).
Any choice on the F8 menu yields the same BSOD message (All the safe mode options, the Last Known Config, and Normal). I had to boot from a XP CD and go to the Recovery Console.
On ONE computer (a Dell) the issue was resolved with the "BATCH spuninst.txt" command to remove the KB977165 patch. Everything is fine and back to normal.
Tried the same thing on the other computer (a Gateway) and no luck. Still getting the BSOD with the "7E" error.
I tried the "BATCH spuninst.txt" command on all 13 February MS patches posted here http://www.microsoft.com/security/updates/bulletins/201002.aspx , but still no luck. There were one or two of those patches that could not be found (they weren't installed),
but the 977165 patch was there and uninstalled.
I tried replacing the C:\Windows\system32\drivers\ATAPI.SYS file from the XP CD, and from another working XP Pro machine. Still no luck.
I searched for the C:\Windows\system32\drivers\SCFLTR.SYS file associated with the Secure-IT spyware, it could not be found.
Anyone with any other suggestions before I wipe this entire system and start from scratch?
Thank you.
