Can someone help me get CARDFILE.EXE running under windows 7/XP Compatibility?

You can associate all CRD files with cardfile.exe. Then make a shortcut to any of your CRD files and the shortcut will auto-launch cardfile.exe and open your clicked CRD file in it.

How do you associate CRD files with cardfile.exe? Easy. Right click any of your CRD files, select Properties. On the General tab, there is an item labeled: "Opens with:". There is a "CHANGE" button to the right of that which, when clicked, takes you to a list of applications from which you can choose. You can have your system open CRD files with whatever application you choose but CRD files are native to cardfile.exe so that would be your best choice.

    This is from Wikipedia (emphasis added) about using the 32-bit version. Note the potential problems because of changes to Unicode and that those problems cannot be fixed.

    In 64-bit versions of Windows, the 32-bit version from Windows NT 3.51 has to be used. It supports long file names and has some support for Unicode characters. According to Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q99340, the cards are specifically designed to hold 450 2-byte Unicode characters. Until Unicode 3 (released long after Windows NT 3.51), all Unicode characters fit into the basic multilingual plane and many operating systems (such as NT and NeXT) assumed that one Unicode character was equivalent to two bytes, but this assumption is now wrong. Therefore,users of the NT 3.51 version of Cardfile on newer versions of Windows will encounter Unicode bugs and these bugs cannot be fixed due to the way the file format was defined.

    Total bull.

    I have old Windows 16-bit cardfile working under Win 7 Home Premium 32-bit and Win 10 Pro 32-bit and I also had it running under Win 8 Pro and Win 8.1 Pro 32-bit.

    Win NT included a 32-bit version. If you search around the Web you can still find it available.  I downloaded it last week and have it running under Win 10 Pro 64-bit and 32-bit. The reason I'm at this thread is that with the 16-bit version you can include a path to the cardfile in a shortcut and that doesn't seem to work in the 32-bit version.

    Re that: I store my "miscellaneous programs" in C:\Program Files\Misc Programs\ and I use Classic Shell Start Menu.

    My Start Menu has a link to "C:\Program Files\Misc Programs\cardfile.exe" D:\Data\PROGRA~1\Rick's.crd

    If I use the Win 3.1 version, clicking on the start menu link opens the .crd file.  If I substitute the Win NT  32-bit version, the program opens but doesn't automatically open the .crd file.  Since I only have one *.crd file, I don't want to associate the *.crd extension for just one file.

    BY THE WAY ... some folks in this thread talk about a "64-bit version".  There is no 64-bit version. There is a 32-bit version that came with Windows NT, and 64-bit Windows can run 32-bit programs.
