Microsoft Picture It incompatability with Windows 7 and alternatives for .mix files.

I have been using Microsoft Picture It for years to design tons of graphics for my business and now I have purchased a new pc loaded with Windows 7 and find that my true love Picture It! is not compatable.  I never dreamed this would be the case for a software that isn't even a decade old or that new pc I just spent thousands on would be sitting right back at the store it came from.  I really feel that Microsoft has cheated me out of something I paid for and invested so much work in by making it unusable and it has brought my small business to a standstill.  What other program is available that is compatable with Windows 7 that will allow me to edit and view existing .mix and other Picture It! format files and contain all the capabilities of Picture It?  I would be willing to purchase additional software from Microsoft to make Picture It compatable to Windows 7 if necessary.

Hello all,

I know that you are all disappointed that Microsoft Picture It is not compatible with Windows 7. 

Your feedback would be better heard if you send it to the Windows 7 Feedback site.

These are your options when software is not compatible:

If the program is not compatible, then you may try to install and run the program in compatibility mode.

Use the following steps:

1)      Right click on the Program

2)      Click on Properties

3)      Click on Compatibility tab

4)      Select Run this program in compatibility mode and select Windows XP, Windows Vista or whatever operating system the program was running successfully.

If you run Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate version, install Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP mode (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/default.aspx) and execute your software in Windows XP.

If you run Windows 7 Home Premium, try VirtualBox (www.virtualbox.org) or VMware Player

(www.vmware.com) or any other 3party virtualization software and install a separate copy of Windows XP (either Home Edition or Professional) for that purpose. You can find virtualization software free of charge that will run on Windows 7 Home Premium.

    Glad to be of help.

    No I didn't upgrade, because I think it's no longer available commercially, and I didn't want to risk losing what I've got. I will probably  sit tight and see if it disappears after 60 days and, if it does, try reinstalling. If you try the upgrade I'd be glad to know what happens.

    if you have a copy of Microsoft office 2003 or 2000 professional, install it on windows 7 or 8

    Picture it 9 will work just find on both...Had same problem when first got 7 and had office 2007

    installed...once I removed it and install 2003 no problem...even after I reinstalled 2007 it still worked.

    Just up graded to 8.1pro and again had the same issue...with office 2010...uninstalled replaced with 2003, install picture it..works like a dream...reinstalled 2010 still working....

    Thanks, but I can't seem to do it. You don't say whether I have to uninstall 2007 first, so I tried it both ways. Each time, I got a notice saying I had to close Word before I could proceed - but Word was already closed. Indeed, after uninstalling 2007, Word wasn't even on the system.

    Since my last contribution, I've come across information in the program that says that when the trial is over some of the features will be disabled - which seems to suggest that you still have the basic version. That may be enough. I've come across one slightly "unbasic" feature I can't get to work anyway. In Picture It, I could create a cutout of all parts that were the same colour and  edit that separately. The selected parts changed to a red colour so you could easily see what they were and you were asked to confirm the selection. In Digital Imaging, this seems to have been replaced by the Magic Wand. Instead of changing colour the selected parts are surrounded by indistinct dotted lines, so I can't be sure where they are. There's no direction to confirm the selection, so I'm not sure it has been made. This uncertainty is reinforced by the fact that using edit tools produces no change whatever. Please can anyone help?
