Microsoft Picture It incompatability with Windows 7 and alternatives for .mix files.

I have been using Microsoft Picture It for years to design tons of graphics for my business and now I have purchased a new pc loaded with Windows 7 and find that my true love Picture It! is not compatable.  I never dreamed this would be the case for a software that isn't even a decade old or that new pc I just spent thousands on would be sitting right back at the store it came from.  I really feel that Microsoft has cheated me out of something I paid for and invested so much work in by making it unusable and it has brought my small business to a standstill.  What other program is available that is compatable with Windows 7 that will allow me to edit and view existing .mix and other Picture It! format files and contain all the capabilities of Picture It?  I would be willing to purchase additional software from Microsoft to make Picture It compatable to Windows 7 if necessary.

Hello all,

I know that you are all disappointed that Microsoft Picture It is not compatible with Windows 7. 

Your feedback would be better heard if you send it to the Windows 7 Feedback site.

These are your options when software is not compatible:

If the program is not compatible, then you may try to install and run the program in compatibility mode.

Use the following steps:

1)      Right click on the Program

2)      Click on Properties

3)      Click on Compatibility tab

4)      Select Run this program in compatibility mode and select Windows XP, Windows Vista or whatever operating system the program was running successfully.

If you run Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate version, install Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP mode (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/default.aspx) and execute your software in Windows XP.

If you run Windows 7 Home Premium, try VirtualBox (www.virtualbox.org) or VMware Player

(www.vmware.com) or any other 3party virtualization software and install a separate copy of Windows XP (either Home Edition or Professional) for that purpose. You can find virtualization software free of charge that will run on Windows 7 Home Premium.

    Marketing 101:  In their greedy realization, they devolve in their humanity by concluding:  “We can no longer offer a program as standard fare with purchased computers where the basic layman can become self-sufficient in doing their own photo graphics projects.  We need to become restrictive by taking it all away, and replace it with something lame that we package and label as an “improvement” (which will insult the intelligence of even the most challenged retard).  We (in our behind closed door dirty deals with various “pay me my cut” manipulated licensing partnerships) must devise ways to force people to now spend $600 on a photoshop program that is overly complex and requires intense skill to use, so the layman user gets so frustrated, they will go out and $PEND more money (they don't have) hiring graphics arts firms (who also buy our software by the way) for something the user could have made on their own.........had we actually cared about our customers and currently supported Picture It.  Meanwhile, as we and our partners hob **** in our carefully devised scheme, we'll be laughing all the way to the bank $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    John - I am so sorry you are having trouble - I have not found any of these problems.

    I haven't noticed - is there a help button for PhotoScape? I think  I would try and contact them to tell them what is happening - they may have the answer. I really don't know what to tell you. 

    I am the type that would become so frustrated with it - I would un-install and re-install to see if it would 

    correct itself.

    Hope you get it figured out - sorry I can't help.

    Thanks Carole. I thought I ought to tell you that I am absolutely baffled by PhotoScape. All I usually want to do is open a photo, crop it , sharpen it, adjust brightness and contrast, sometimes alter the colours and save it. occasionally, I might want to change some parts of the photo only, but there's little pint in my trying that at the moment, because I haven't masteredthe basics. . What I am finding is that sometimes during this process everything goes pale and nothing will respond. Also, advanced options is sometimes on offer and sometimes not. This is particularly important with sharpening because the basic sharpening tool is pathetic, and I need the advanced options and don't know how to get them if they don't appear. I think the edit button on these various options is sometimes absent as well.

    I did complete a couple of photos, but I don't appear to be doing anything different when I can't. I don't find the instructional videos explain this. Any ideas about where I could be going wrong?

    I don't understand their instructions about how to handle layers at all.

    It seems more complicated and time consuming than Picture IT, which I find very quick and easy. I can't think how I'd manage with Essentials if that's more complicated.

    I think you will like PhotoScape. I am discovering so many things that can be done with this program. Last night I found many, many different frames I can put around my pictures  there is so much to explore.

    I had Photoshop Essentials and found it to be too complicated - so far I am extremely happy with PhotoScape.

    Good luck in whatever you decide.
