Microsoft Picture It incompatability with Windows 7 and alternatives for .mix files.

I have been using Microsoft Picture It for years to design tons of graphics for my business and now I have purchased a new pc loaded with Windows 7 and find that my true love Picture It! is not compatable.  I never dreamed this would be the case for a software that isn't even a decade old or that new pc I just spent thousands on would be sitting right back at the store it came from.  I really feel that Microsoft has cheated me out of something I paid for and invested so much work in by making it unusable and it has brought my small business to a standstill.  What other program is available that is compatable with Windows 7 that will allow me to edit and view existing .mix and other Picture It! format files and contain all the capabilities of Picture It?  I would be willing to purchase additional software from Microsoft to make Picture It compatable to Windows 7 if necessary.

Hello all,

I know that you are all disappointed that Microsoft Picture It is not compatible with Windows 7. 

Your feedback would be better heard if you send it to the Windows 7 Feedback site.

These are your options when software is not compatible:

If the program is not compatible, then you may try to install and run the program in compatibility mode.

Use the following steps:

1)      Right click on the Program

2)      Click on Properties

3)      Click on Compatibility tab

4)      Select Run this program in compatibility mode and select Windows XP, Windows Vista or whatever operating system the program was running successfully.

If you run Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate version, install Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP mode (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/default.aspx) and execute your software in Windows XP.

If you run Windows 7 Home Premium, try VirtualBox (www.virtualbox.org) or VMware Player

(www.vmware.com) or any other 3party virtualization software and install a separate copy of Windows XP (either Home Edition or Professional) for that purpose. You can find virtualization software free of charge that will run on Windows 7 Home Premium.

    I haven't tried to use the feature to cut out a piece from one photo and insert it into another. I hope it is there somewhere - I really haven't had a need to use it yet.  

    As far as the clone feature - I use it all the time to remove backgrounds and other items not wanted in the picture.  I hit the clone icon - then the brush size -  click on the spot you want to use as the clone then move the curser to the area you want to insert the clone. - click and move the curser around in the area you want cloned.  I'm not sure that makes sense to you - I have had great success, but am not sure I can explain.

    To remove moles - scratches - wrinkles -blemishes - I use the fade tool - run it over what you want to correct.

    I have never had a problem with the sharpen feature - it looks good in the PhotoScape window, and in the photo program I send it to. I don't know what the problem could be.

    Thanks - anything's worth a try. However, there are two features of Picture It for which I have so far failed to find an adequate substitute and PhotoScape is no exception. They are:

    Sharpen - I can't tell how much sharpening has occurred until I  open the image in another program and then I'm likely to get a grotesque result. It's trial and error between the two places, which is unacceptably cumbersome.

    Cutouts - I suppose the clone function is supposed to do this in PhotoScape. You are supposed to be able to identify the area you want to clone, but the only instruction for this is "Click". My trial and error attempts produce outcomes which are nothing like what I want and I don't understand what's happening. Maybe you can  help with this.

    I know what you are going through, Brent. The Microsoft Picture Gallery is a joke.  I tried everything to find a good picture program - finally I found one that is very much like Picture It. This new program has many more features than Picture It; however, I'm not sure I will use them - I only do what I did on Picture It - I may experiment with everything else later. 

    The program I am talking about is called PhotoScape.com - it is a free program. I  recommend you try it - good luck.

    I wasted my time downloading PhotoGallery and it still doesn't open .mix formatted pictures.  Thanks for nothing.
