Microsoft Picture It incompatability with Windows 7 and alternatives for .mix files.

I have been using Microsoft Picture It for years to design tons of graphics for my business and now I have purchased a new pc loaded with Windows 7 and find that my true love Picture It! is not compatable.  I never dreamed this would be the case for a software that isn't even a decade old or that new pc I just spent thousands on would be sitting right back at the store it came from.  I really feel that Microsoft has cheated me out of something I paid for and invested so much work in by making it unusable and it has brought my small business to a standstill.  What other program is available that is compatable with Windows 7 that will allow me to edit and view existing .mix and other Picture It! format files and contain all the capabilities of Picture It?  I would be willing to purchase additional software from Microsoft to make Picture It compatable to Windows 7 if necessary.

Hello all,

I know that you are all disappointed that Microsoft Picture It is not compatible with Windows 7. 

Your feedback would be better heard if you send it to the Windows 7 Feedback site.

These are your options when software is not compatible:

If the program is not compatible, then you may try to install and run the program in compatibility mode.

Use the following steps:

1)      Right click on the Program

2)      Click on Properties

3)      Click on Compatibility tab

4)      Select Run this program in compatibility mode and select Windows XP, Windows Vista or whatever operating system the program was running successfully.

If you run Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate version, install Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP mode (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/default.aspx) and execute your software in Windows XP.

If you run Windows 7 Home Premium, try VirtualBox (www.virtualbox.org) or VMware Player

(www.vmware.com) or any other 3party virtualization software and install a separate copy of Windows XP (either Home Edition or Professional) for that purpose. You can find virtualization software free of charge that will run on Windows 7 Home Premium.

    Hooray!  After many wasted hours on this forum trying out "solutions" for getting Picture It on Windows 7 without success, I have finally been able to do it. This is thanks to an article in the journal Computeractive, 23 Dec--6 Jan pages 58-9. The article gives a systematic approach to the problem. First you try various ways of running it in Compatibility mode - which seems to involve mainly kidding Windows 7 that it is really an earlier system,  This did not work for me, so I went to their next step, which involves installing Vista as a "virtual desktop" alongside Windows 7.  You can't do this directly in 7 unless you have an advanced version. So they recommend "Virtualbox" (www.snipca.com/14660)., with an allegedly excellent manual at www.snipca.com/14661. However, the article told me how to do what I needed to do, and I got my Vista and was able to install Picture It and it works. You might be able to work out how to without the article if you ignore all the options you have to choose at each stage and just accept the ones they propose.

    Hi John,

    Is this to start a clone or to insert it

    Both- select clone - select the size - move the curser into the picture at the spot you want to copy;

    let's say a hand over someone's shoulder is what you want to remove  - click to secure clone piece - while holding the curser button down - move down into the hand -  at this point you can move the circle over the hand  - you will see the hand disappearing.   If you need to pick more out of the background -  release curser pick the new spot and repeat above. If you need to change the size of the circle go back to the main menu and pick another size - repeat above.  If you run out of clone area go back to the beginning and re-insert the circle in the picture to where you need it.

    If you want to use the same clone repeatedly, what do you do - click in several places one after

    the other?

    You don't need to keep clicking just drag the circle with your curser.

    Also, am I right in thinking all clones are circular and you can only change the size?

    Unfortunately it does seem that all the clones are circular in different sizes - no selection like on Picture It.  So far the different sizes have suited my needs.

    Trial and error are the best methods of learning.  I am still doing trial and error  on some of the other programs. I picked one of my photos and just keep experimenting on it.

    Re your advice, I'm not sure what you mean by "click and move the cursor around in the area you want cloned". Is this to start a clone or to insert it? If the latter, what movements do you have to make to get what effects? Also, am I right in thinking all clones are circular and you can only change the size? If you want to use the same clone repeatedly, what do you do - click in several places one after the other? I'm sorry to bother you further with this, but the program and its help section don't seem to tell you these things at all.
