Microsoft Picture It incompatability with Windows 7 and alternatives for .mix files.

I have been using Microsoft Picture It for years to design tons of graphics for my business and now I have purchased a new pc loaded with Windows 7 and find that my true love Picture It! is not compatable.  I never dreamed this would be the case for a software that isn't even a decade old or that new pc I just spent thousands on would be sitting right back at the store it came from.  I really feel that Microsoft has cheated me out of something I paid for and invested so much work in by making it unusable and it has brought my small business to a standstill.  What other program is available that is compatable with Windows 7 that will allow me to edit and view existing .mix and other Picture It! format files and contain all the capabilities of Picture It?  I would be willing to purchase additional software from Microsoft to make Picture It compatable to Windows 7 if necessary.

Hello all,

I know that you are all disappointed that Microsoft Picture It is not compatible with Windows 7. 

Your feedback would be better heard if you send it to the Windows 7 Feedback site.

These are your options when software is not compatible:

If the program is not compatible, then you may try to install and run the program in compatibility mode.

Use the following steps:

1)      Right click on the Program

2)      Click on Properties

3)      Click on Compatibility tab

4)      Select Run this program in compatibility mode and select Windows XP, Windows Vista or whatever operating system the program was running successfully.

If you run Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate version, install Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP mode (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/default.aspx) and execute your software in Windows XP.

If you run Windows 7 Home Premium, try VirtualBox (www.virtualbox.org) or VMware Player

(www.vmware.com) or any other 3party virtualization software and install a separate copy of Windows XP (either Home Edition or Professional) for that purpose. You can find virtualization software free of charge that will run on Windows 7 Home Premium.

    I have and have been using Microsoft picture it 2000 and have been using it on my computer that has windows 7 on it, The work around I have found is to install it while windows 7 is in its infant stage, By this I mean before any microsoft updates have been installed on the system, The reason that I have found that it does not work is because of the internet explorer files that are updated will not let the program install internet explorer 5. if you install the program before updating your computer it installs internet explorer 5 and runs perfectly fine even after updating!

    It looks like Microsoft does not have a solution but i have , just buy a Mac, then install the software call "NVware fusion", that software lets you run a virtual version on Windows, any version of windows. After you install the NVware, then install windows XP in there, then install Microsoft Picture It, and use it only to run Microsoft Picture It. Just remember that Microsoft doesn't support  XP any more. It works perfect for me. and i will still use it that way until Microsoft comes with a solution for Windows 7.

    I think about the fact that i can't use the picture it program.. but, KNOW microsoft could care less.. i have purchased a Mac.. and i am going to try to NEVER purchase Microsoft products again.. What they did was unethical. When you buy a product that cost what this package cost.. YOU have BOUGHT IT and there should not be a time limit on how long you can use it.. They should be helt responsible to make it compatible with any new products they come out with.. but, there is no LAW to help the customer get any satisfaction for this… soooo… LESSON LEARNED… bye bye Microsoft. I am very happy with my Mac

    I have had the same experience and am very cross with Microsoft - but they plainly don't care, so I've looked for other solutions. What I found is already on the forum. For basic editing, I use Paint.net (a completely different free program from Paint), but I've had to do Internet searches to find out how to use it, the results of which are on the forum.  There's a revised version of Picture It called Microsoft Digital Imaging, which is very good. The forum tells you how to get this, but you get only the trial edition, which loses its most helpful features after a month or so. That's also discontinued, so you can't upgrade to the full version. I'm told it's possible to fool your computer into believing its still at the time before the trial version expires, but I've not tried this properly. When I do. I will report on the results.

    I could gather this information together, but suspect that you won't want to know. I get the impression that you just want to batter Microsoft into doing the right thing. I don't think they will - they seem able to ignore it all. But good luck to you.
