Microsoft Picture It incompatability with Windows 7 and alternatives for .mix files.

I have been using Microsoft Picture It for years to design tons of graphics for my business and now I have purchased a new pc loaded with Windows 7 and find that my true love Picture It! is not compatable.  I never dreamed this would be the case for a software that isn't even a decade old or that new pc I just spent thousands on would be sitting right back at the store it came from.  I really feel that Microsoft has cheated me out of something I paid for and invested so much work in by making it unusable and it has brought my small business to a standstill.  What other program is available that is compatable with Windows 7 that will allow me to edit and view existing .mix and other Picture It! format files and contain all the capabilities of Picture It?  I would be willing to purchase additional software from Microsoft to make Picture It compatable to Windows 7 if necessary.

I know that you are all disappointed that Microsoft Picture It is not compatible with Windows 7. 

Your feedback would be better heard if you send it to the Windows 7 Feedback site.

These are your options when software is not compatible:

If the program is not compatible, then you may try to install and run the program in compatibility mode.

Use the following steps:

1)      Right click on the Program

2)      Click on Properties

3)      Click on Compatibility tab

4)      Select Run this program in compatibility mode and select Windows XP, Windows Vista or whatever operating system the program was running successfully.

If you run Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate version, install Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP mode (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/default.aspx) and execute your software in Windows XP.

If you run Windows 7 Home Premium, try VirtualBox (www.virtualbox.org) or VMware Player

(www.vmware.com) or any other 3party virtualization software and install a separate copy of Windows XP (either Home Edition or Professional) for that purpose. You can find virtualization software free of charge that will run on Windows 7 Home Premium.

    Don't know who is supposed to be doing the recommending. Microsoft's position, as I understand it, is that Picture it is not compatible with Windows 7 and that the programs in Windows 7 will do all you need. They must know that that is not true. They're not quite right anyway. Some people have used Picture I t wih Windows 7 without the least trouble, as opposed to others, who, like myself, have tried every work-round under the sun and can't even get it to install. There are different versions of Picture it and probably some are compatible and some not. I couldn't tell you which.

    Fortunately, I have another computer with Vista and can use Picture It on that. On my everyday computer, I use Paint.net, which is free, and I find it useful. There are no comprehensible instructions with it, but various people online have explained how to do some things. In an earlier post on this thread I shared some of this knowledge. There are some things I haven't learned how to do and I have to move things on to the other computer to use Picture it. One thing I can't get at all is how to use layers to do anything at all - I just can't find any instructions related to actual tasks. If anyone can help, I'll be very grateful.

    OK, four years have passed since the last posting on this subject.  Has anything changed.  I have a ton of work in Picture It 7.0 and I'm finally upgrading my PC and OS to Windows 7.  What is the current recommendation?

    Picture it Photo Premium 10 works with Windows 7 64 and 32 bit

    I used to use Picture it 7 with Windows XP for the calendar maker but it does not work with any settings in Windows 7 professional. Downloaded and installed Picture it 10 and can now open and edit my old calendar files.

    Not sure why, but I tried installing Picture It! 9 again on my 64-bit Windows 7 laptop and found that it installs and runs fine.  The only problem I had was nothing was added to the start menu (I manually added a shortcut).

    I recall that when I originally went to Windows 7 years ago and tried to install using the same CD that it wouldn't work.  I don't recall what didn't work at the time, but I do remember being very disappointed.  Here I am years later, still frustrated that I can't find the same functionality without paying ridiculous fees to Adobe, so I tried again.  Now it works.  Weird...

    Not sure if it is relevant, but my copy of Windows 7 is provided by my employer, and I recently rebuilt the system using my employer's latest installation CD.  Maybe something got tweaked in that installation that had the side-effect of allowing Picture It! to function.   Not complaining, but I wish I knew what changed to allow it to work.
