original title: Windows 7 Explorer Frequently Crashes!!! **** ... no way!!! yep. It usually happens when my computer is left on overnight or after a few hours of some serious php scripting with but of course MS Expression Web 3. lmfao. It usually results in not being able to rename something ... right click ... delete ... etc. Its one of these not multiples ... that causes a explorer crash and in order to fix this annoying undocumented feature ... i MUST REBOOT! Do you know how annoying this is when your right in the middle of editing some plain text documents!!!!! ... the initial installation took about 20-30min to actually start up and took an excessively long long time to install to begin with.
WTF Microsoft ... I thought Win7 wasnt going to have any of the previous OS issues! Linux FTW!

Our site contact, tried this but found no evidence of a rootkit. Thanks anyway. We will attempt to remove any codec packs and anything that invokes the shell extensions and see if that makes a difference. BTW the same problem happens with MMC snap ins as well
Usually if explorer crashes, its something you may have installed. And its option/s may appear in the context menu (when you right mouse on something).
And it may also crash say if you're using 64 bit windows and you install a 32 bit program, which adds options to the context menu (it may not like it or may not be compatible). With the version of windows you're using
What you could try is install something likeccleaner(click on advanced) so you can untick the optional installs. Then run it go to tools / startup. Untick everything under the context tab). Then see if it crashes. If it doesnt you could tick each option until it crashes again.
Then you'll know which one is making it crash
It looks like this prob used to happen / may still happen in Vista.
You could try what someone tried above - ShellExView
And yup codecs are a known cause of explorer.exe crashing. And you do have to be careful with some codecs. Some contain / install malware
