Disable caps lock key

I have done web searches on how to disable that pesky caps lock key, but I thought you guys might provide safer answers. I am reasonably proficient with computers, but my fat fingers keeps hitting the CAPS LOCK KEY AND THEN EVERYTHING LOOKS LIKE THIS UNTIL I REALIZE IT AND GO BACK AND re-type it. I do it a lot and it is driving me nuts! Help please!

I understand that you found some suggestions about registry edition - they are not so bad. If you don't want to download any files which allow you to disable CAPS LOCK, you can create it by your own:

  1. Press WinKey+R > type notepad and press Enter
  2. Paste to the notepad this:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]

"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,00,00,3a,00,00,00,00,00 3. File > Save As... 

- Select for **Save as type: All Files**
- Enter in the **File name** field: **disable\_caps\_lock.reg**
- Click **Save**
  1. Right click on the created file > Merge
  2. Restart your system

In the case that you want to enable CAPS LOCK again, you need to delete that registry entry, so you need follow these steps:

  1. Press WinKey+R > type regedit and press Enter
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout
  3. Right click on the Scancode Map > Delete
  4. Restart your system

I guess it might be the only way to disable CAPS LOCK.

In the case that you still don't want to do that, Windows 7 is offering something different than disabling CAPS LOCK. You can enable Toggle Keys, so you are going to hear a tone when you press CAPS LOCK. To do this follow these steps:

  1. Press Start > Control Panel > Easy of Access   > Easy of Access Center > Make the keyboard easier to use
  2. Mark the Turn on Toggle Keys checkbox

    you still seem to not understand that the tweak had been working for years..before the anniversary update.

    This is not a first try. I have had capslock disabled on this HP Envy Recline since I got it., with W8 and W10.

    I have capslock disabled on my 2 W7 Ult machine and my 2 W7 Home machines.

    i also HAD it  disabled on my W10 Acer Aspire NetBook... This no longer that case, since Anniversary Upgrade ...it is not longer disabled on my W10 notebook. The reg entry is intact.

    Reappling reg patch and rebooting does not correct situation.

    BTW I also had Scoll-lock and Num-lock disabled before ANNIVERSARY.. no longer the case.,

    I may have to fall back to the old Win3 hack..pull the keycaps ;(

    Pavlov got it right and this method works for me.  And sometimes I do use the "Caps Lock" key as intended.

    Thx.  And I can foresee some reader plowing back through all six pages of this thread to find out what exactly Pavlov said.  :-)

    Well said and your last paragraph is a KISS gem.  I use the audible response to address my propensity to accidentally hit the "Caps Lock" key instead of the "Shift" key.

    Pavlov got it right and this method works for me.  And sometimes I do use the "Caps Lock" key as intended.

    In Win10 Settings->Ease of Access->Keyboard->Toggle Keys->"Hear a tone when you press Caps Lock, Num Lock and Scroll Lock"->On

    Here is an unadvertised bonus very much in the KISS vein:  This setting is part of your profile in the MS Cloud so you will discover, as I did, that every Windows machine you log into  with your Microsoft Account login will give you the same audible tones when your little finger misbehaves.

    Aubrey2386 - I know this is an old post and I don't have a broken caps lock key in the "on" mode but I turned on caps lock (Dell E5450, Win 7 Pro) and the "on" light lit up.

    Then I opened the on-screen keyboard (W7 - Control Panel, Ease of access) and it showed Caps Lock as highlighted so I clicked it and the Caps Lock LED went out.

    Hardware may prevent that work-around for you, or hardware may re-activate Caps Lock the next time you restart - but I think there's an option to turn on the on-screen keyboard after reboot so you can then turn Caps Lock off again and close the on-screen keyboard.
