Disable caps lock key

I have done web searches on how to disable that pesky caps lock key, but I thought you guys might provide safer answers. I am reasonably proficient with computers, but my fat fingers keeps hitting the CAPS LOCK KEY AND THEN EVERYTHING LOOKS LIKE THIS UNTIL I REALIZE IT AND GO BACK AND re-type it. I do it a lot and it is driving me nuts! Help please!

I understand that you found some suggestions about registry edition - they are not so bad. If you don't want to download any files which allow you to disable CAPS LOCK, you can create it by your own:

Press WinKey+R > type notepad and press Enter
Paste to the notepad this:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]

"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,00,00,3a,00,00,00,00,00 3. File > Save As...

- Select for **Save as type: All Files**
- Enter in the **File name** field: **disable\_caps\_lock.reg**
- Click **Save**

Right click on the created file > Merge
Restart your system

In the case that you want to enable CAPS LOCK again, you need to delete that registry entry, so you need follow these steps:

Press WinKey+R > type regedit and press Enter
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout
Right click on the Scancode Map > Delete
Restart your system

I guess it might be the only way to disable CAPS LOCK.

In the case that you still don't want to do that, Windows 7 is offering something different than disabling CAPS LOCK. You can enable Toggle Keys, so you are going to hear a tone when you press CAPS LOCK. To do this follow these steps:

Press Start > Control Panel > Easy of Access > Easy of Access Center > Make the keyboard easier to use
Mark the Turn on Toggle Keys checkbox

Hi, I used and posted a complementary review in March 2013!

Just put Windows 7 back on after trying 10!

But now MERGE is not an option, The "double click" as suggested by someone, just brings up Notepad!

Any help appreciated!

That means when you saved the file, notepad added ".txt" as the file extension. Rename the file to remove the .txt. The extension must be .reg, not .reg.txt.

This method works great. I have used it for years. You would think that after all this time developers would simply write in an option to disable various keys on your keybaord. Personally I would disable a few others too. Instead, they seem to be taking options away, or making them more dificult to find. Or, so it seems.

Aubrey2386 - I know this is an old post and I don't have a broken caps lock key in the "on" mode but I turned on caps lock (Dell E5450, Win 7 Pro) and the "on" light lit up.

Then I opened the on-screen keyboard (W7 - Control Panel, Ease of access) and it showed Caps Lock as highlighted so I clicked it and the Caps Lock LED went out.

Hardware may prevent that work-around for you, or hardware may re-activate Caps Lock the next time you restart - but I think there's an option to turn on the on-screen keyboard after reboot so you can then turn Caps Lock off again and close the on-screen keyboard.
