KVM switch + Windows 7 creates monitor switching nightmare

i found a solution that works!

My situation is a single monitor. When I switch it off and on, windows were resized and moved to the top left corner.

It requires installing VNC and using another PC or iPhone to VNC to the machine though - but at least it works.

This VNC trick worked for my HTPC. I logged in with VNCViewer from another PC to my HTPC running VNC server, while the input was set to another source. I changed the "VGA" resolution to 1920x1080 (my HDTV size), and now I can now finally switch inputs away from the HTPC, and later come back to the HTPC with all windows intact..

My biggest Win7 annoyance removed!

OK I hope you guys read this before my systems needs a reboot.Right now the problem is gone.It was there earlier today but is now gone.This happened once before, but the problem returned after a reboot. Any ideas on what to check on my system to try and track down a fix?

KVM Pro - I don't disagree that supporting EDID is not the correct path to take - what I disagree with is that it's being forced on us with no option to turn it off. 

Even your option of emulator's is not a good option.  Let's assume I was just working with 2 monitors - that's $70.  I can buy one of your own companies units (BTW:  Aren't you a bit biased here...) for $60.  That's the same as replacing.  In my scenario I shouldn't have to spend a minimum of $210 (6 ports in use) in order to upgrade to Windows 7 and have my system's functionality as expected (Interesting that your company doesn't have an 8 port unit - I haven't found one yet that supports EDID).  Sooner or later I will have to purchase a new unit - and when I do so I will make sure that the new one supports EDID - but until then I shouldn't have these problems just because I don't have 'Top of the Line' hardware.

And that still doesn't help the people who don't use KVM's and just turn their monitors off and have their resolutions screwed up.

I agree completely with Joseph.  I'll add another thing that particularly bothers me about this.  My KVM (IOGear GCS932U) works fine with XP, Vista, AND worked just fine with Win 7 beta and RC.  Then the final version had KVM issues.  So obviously Microsoft knows how to implement a workaround to this issue if they wanted to, they are just choosing not to.  I would have less problem with their decision of "we're forcing you to buy a EDID compliant KVM" if they had stated it from the beginning of the Win 7 process.  They didn't.  Even if I did, I still think there should be a an option, or even just a KB article, that shows how to workaround the issue, for those willing to endure the "risk" of a non-EDID experience.  Like they did in XP, Vista, etc....

BTW, I have Win 7 on one port of my KVM, but on the other port I've tried Linux, all flavors of windows, and now use a Mac permanently there.  None of the other OS's have issues when switching back and forth.  Congratulations, Microsoft. 

Can we have a workaround, please?

We have the same(similar?) issue using a VGA monitor on a Belkin KVM (F1DJ102P) between a Windows 7 PC & XP Pro PC using a 22" TFT.

If we boot the windows 7 pc through the KVM then the screen size will not go above 1024x768 and the screen is not detected. If we plug the screen into the PC and boot we get the maximum display size and the screen model is detected. Transfer the cables over and all is fine until we next reboot.
