Many thanks!  (I like your justified irony about the "support engineer". ) Your advice is superbly brief and clear.

I followed it, and deleted the message left hanging in the OUTBOX.  Then I sent a new trial message to myself, both at my btinternet address and at my gmail address.  It got sent, did not appear in the OUTBOX, or in my Sent folder. It arrived at once in my gmail, but not (at least, immediately) in my Btinternet WLM !!

But it seems that "a BT server" has not been working as it should.

I remain very grateful for this advice.

In the Home Tab, check to Work Offline. In the View Tab, uncheck the Reading Pane. On the left hand side, scroll down to "Storage Folders" and you'll see the Outbox. Open the Outbox and delete the message.

The very first post by the support engineer should have just given the simple solution and been done with the entire conversation. Just like trying to get an answer from government employees, microsoft has to give people the run-a-around and try to send you to 50 different "departments" before you finally get an answer when they could have just answered it or found out the answer in the first place. You can't tell me that someone who is an engineer for the company is not already familiar with all products, if they aren't, then they should be or should be fired.
