The Snipping tool works fine except when I try to use it in Internet explorer.  The entire screen goes to either black or grey when a snipping tool or "New" is selected.

Hi Stansd,

It seems like something in Internet Explorer is preventing Snipping Tool to do its task.

Were you able to capture screenshots earlier from Internet Explorer using Snipping Tool before this issue occurred?

Firstly, check to see if snipping tool works on other web browsers. Also, try the steps mentioned below to see if that help you in fixing the issue.

Step 1: Run Snipping Tool in Administrator mode

a.    Click on Start; in the Start search type Snipping Tool.

b.    Right click on Snipping Tool and choose to “Run as administrator”.

c.    Open Internet Explorer and then try to capture screen shots.

Step 2: Perform a System File Checker

The System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) scans for missing or corrupted system files and repairs them. Visit the link below to know how to perform system file checker scan on your computer.

I have been using the snipping tool for years with no problem.  I installed a bunch of updates from Microsoft yesterday and the first time I used the snipping tool after, the entire screen goes gray.  If I try to capture a section of the screen, it pastes a completely black space.  Don't know that the updates did it, but it's highly coincidental, if not.  Suggestions?

I found where the issue was with my IBM Security Trsuteer Rapport.  Below is the fix that helped me.

The issue you have reported may be related to one of Rapport's protection mechanisms.

To verify this, please try to disable Rapport's protection from screen captures of sensitive information.

To disable Rapport's protection from screen captures of sensitive information:

    1. Open Rapport's Console by choosing - Start Menu > Programs > Trusteer Endpoint Protection > Trusteer Endpoint Protection Console 2. Advance to the next page by clicking on the green arrow at the bottom-right.
    2. Under 'Security Policy' at the top left corner, click on 'Edit Policy'.
    3. Enter the letters as they are shown in the image and click OK.
    4. Locate 'Block Screen Capturing' and select 'Never' in the drop-down menu.
    5. Click 'Save' and reboot your computer.
    6. Check if the issue is resolved.
