Schannel Error 36888

Getting the same error.  Just installed Trial Version of Outlook 2010 and noticed the message.

The error occurs when I allow Outlook to set up e-mail accounts on its own.  The first try is on a encrypted connection which fails, then the option to use an unencrypted connection succeeds.  The error happens during the encrypted attempts and occurs 3 times in succession.

My POP3 server just uses a password, so it seems the attempts to use a encrypted protocol is involved.  But maybe someone who understands more about how it works will know what type of scenarios might generate such an error.

Also I notice if I let Outlook set up the accounts, it will succeed using the incorrect server name.  Mine are pop-server instead of just pop, but Outlook sets it up anyway.  But e-mail access does not generate the error even using the wrong server name.

How can the above observations from October 31, 2011 be labled as the "ANSWER". ?

I suspect the Forum Administrator is trying to make his/her numbers look better than they really are.

"Holes in the firewall" makes me think of Skype again. I know that for me the issue disappears when I uninstall Skype. The Skype software was developed by a kind of "pirate crew", before Microsoft bought the company. I wonder if Microsoft ever reviewed the software, I think they did not. Also, I wonder if Microsoft ever follows these issues such as this one. In any case, they have not repaired Skype yet, the holes in the firewall are still there.

The messages disappear, but the issue does not. I am not sure that that turning a blind eye is a good idea. I'd rather know there is something wrong.

Thanks one and all for you posts, I too would be interested in finding out the root cause. Does anyone know of suitable logs to peruse?

Just an addition, I uninstalled Skype and its associated program yesterday. This morning I received 41 Schannel error messages upon start-up. Guess Skype is not the culprit. BTW I am running Windows 7 Home Premium with all updates + IE 11, office 365, Outlook 2013 and so on.

I just started getting this same error today.  My system is Windows 7 SP1 64 bit with IE 11 installed.

I believe others who have posted here have said it best regarding no real solution being offered to solve the problem

Yesterday, I downloaded  security updates KB3033890, KB3059317, KB3057839, KB3063858 and a cumulative security update for IE 11.

This obviously doesn't apply to other posters that have been seeking a solution for some time.  I believe Microsoft has had problems with updates in the past.  Just sayin'
